Default Black Screen Of Death "KSOD"

Today I was doing some further overclocking on my sig rig and found myself with an unusable Operating System.

This is what happened. When trying a different configuration, Vista booted but I got a BSOD very quick. When re-booting, Vista told me that it needed to run CHKDSK on my C: Drive. I let it do it, but instead of passing, it started detecting errors as follows:

- "Deleting an index entry with Id 261 from index $SII of file 9"
- "Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file 1"
- "Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file 2"
- "Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file ..."
- "Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file 200,000+"

When it finished "repairing" whatever it is that it found, Vista would boot to a black screen in which only the cursor could be seen and moved, but no other possibility. [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL] would not do anything at this point.

Quickly googled the problem and found 2 links worth mentioning:

- Windows Vista Black Screen with Mouse Cursor Only Issue
- Microsoft's KB article 946532

The solution presented in the first link did not work for me, since the "NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService" was already set in my register. Microsoft's claim that it was fixed in SP1 was not true, either, since I had SP1 running when this happened.

So, I ended up recovering my OS from a full backup. Fortunately, all my data resides in a separate HDD than the OS so, besides a few screenshots and files I had in my desktop, nothing was lost (looks like...)

The way I see it is that since my Overclock profile failed, it did corrupt my OS files in my RAID0 drive (I use it only for OS & software, not for data). I have to say that this was a known risk when decided to setup RAID0.

What troubles me is that there was no way to recover without the use of a full disk backup. Vista repair options did not work, safe mode would not work either.

Has anyone heard about this "KSOD" issue?
Do you know if there's a real fix?

Didn't really need a fresh install. I had a backup made with Vista's "Complete PC Backup & Restore Image". After restoring from there, all I had to do is get the latest MS & Antivirus updates.

Does Anyone know anything else about this black screen issue?
