I don't have any shell recommendations, but I'll give you what I do have.

To get the maximum performance out of XP, do the following:

Visit the following pages on www.BlackViper.com:
For the first one, I recommend that you read about each and every service to find out exactly how you should have it set for your particular system. You'll know what to do with each just by what he wrote. He has a very deep understanding of each service. I find that I have my services tweaked in such a way that it's a cross between his "Safe", "Tweaked" and "Bare Bones" configurations. In other words, I tailored it for my needs.

The "Strange Services" page is very informative and helpful. Don't skip it!

And of course, there's the Super Tweaks page. I really love this one. If you go through it, then I think you'll understand why. It was a lot of fun, and now I feel that my system is as streamlined as it can possibly be.

Get TweakUI XP.

Here's the description directly from this page:
Quote:
This PowerToy gives you access to system settings that are not exposed in the Windows XP default user interface, including mouse settings, Explorer settings, taskbar settings, and more.
One of the many reasons I recommend TweakUI is because I can remove almost every Control Panel feature that I don't need to have in the Control Panel. I mean, because of Black Viper's Super Tweaks page, I put all of the ones I use the most on the Quick Launch bar and then removed them from the Control Panel with TweakUI. I also have the Control Panel on the Start Menu and it's displayed as a menu. It's slick.

Go through everything in TweakUI. And I mean take your time. It's one awesome utility. One of my many favorite things about TweakUI is decreasing the time it takes for submenus to open when I mouseover them. I have it set so that they open almost instantly. It makes my system seem even faster. lol

I also highly and strongly recommend IOBit's Smart Defrag.

I have never loved one piece of software this much. It really is as awesome as IOBit says it is.

Now, for the best performance out of Smart Defrag, I highly recommend thoroughly going through all of it's options and settings to make sure it's doing what you want, and nothing that you don't. For example, it has an Auto Defrag option that defrags the hard drive when my system is idle, but I manually run it at the end of every computer session anyway, and I always use the Deep Optimize option.

Go into the Keyboard Control Panel

Just change the repeat rate to as fast as it goes.

There are probably a few more, but I can't think of them right now. But if I think of more, then I'll post them here.

Edit: When I began typing this up, nobody was viewing this thread, and nobody had replied yet.

Ok, so basically the only reason this thread is still open is because Twocables posted in the correct manner, i.e. a helpful response. You should all take a page from his book and try to help out fellow members. If they are doing something wrong, report it or PM them, but keep it polite and to the point. Name calling, thread crapping, and posting stupid tags are never ok no manner the OP or what they have done.

With that said, please no more off topic posts in this thread, you won't like the outcome.

There is Window Blinds by Stardock, at Stardock.com. The full version isn't free though.

BTW, to a mod, the tags are still there.

I second Smart Defrag! I feel as though my system runs far quicker since i installed it! Love the Program! I run deep optimize at least once a week on all my HDD's!

Yeah, I forgot to mention that ever since using Smart Defrag every day (I actually run the Deep Optimize every day, but I may reduce it to once a week or so). And ever since I started using it, most programs that I use regularly open up WAY faster; almost as if they're loading from memory! And this is regarding how fast they open up after a fresh boot!! But before Smart Defrag, they would indeed take much longer to load after a fresh boot than they otherwise do straight from memory.

Now, I have indeed tried other defraggers. But none of them were able to optimize my HDD like Smart Defrag. I'm simultaneously impressed and confused at how much better it is. I'm confused because I just don't get how it could be so much better, but hey - I don't care. hehe

So yeah, Smart Defrag is awesome.

Seriously, why do you capitalize the first letter of every word? I mean, do you think you could stop doing that?
