The problem is that most iPods are formatted as FAT32 and the iPod software cannot read an NTFS disk. Here this guy has managed to do it so I guess then it would be possible to do. Just do it at your own risk.

You could most likely use a partition program to resize the FAT32 partition down 4GB and then create a NTFS partition and use that for the windows install.

Only thing i think you would run into would be when the iPod boots.. will it try to boot from the NTFS partition that "isnt there" (since it can't read it).

Verification that this method works? There are a lot of guides out there, but this one seems pretty well done.

I'll be trying it once my 4gb flash drive comes in.

Very useful and informative guide, i've used a similar method myself. However there are a couple of things that i did differently (other than not using your guide, no idea it was here!). The most useful addition to your guide is in the last paragraph of this post, and is more interesting than DOS commands for most people .

The first is you can use device manager to set the USB drive to 'optimise for performance' and that allows formating to NTFS. Alternatively and much simpler is to use DOS to both format the USB drive and convert to NTFS, which saves the hastle of downloading and installing the HP utility. Please read instructions carefuly and fully.

diskpart
list disk
select disk #
clean
exit
convert *: /fs:ntfs
Of course this point isn't a major issue and its just the method i would use to reach the same aim. My only other point of the guide as it is would be that copying and pasting all the files from inside the .ISO folder to the USB can be done simply by using copy+paste, i did so and have used the method three times without issue. (builds 7000&7100)

One addition to your guide which i think would enhance it would be to make the following point: when using a 32 bit windows OS it is impossible to use the bootsect /nt60 command with an x64 ISO. The solution to this problem is to execute the bootsect command on a 32bit windows 7 ISO files, and then copy the x64 files to the USB as normal. Tried and tested by yours trully. Only problem is downloading both 32 and 64 bit ISOs, although fortunatly the 32bit ISO is smaller! Also not tried with windows build 7100, but theres no reason for me to believe it wouldn't still work.

Apologies for the long winded post, but hopefully it will help someone else who has the instruction set problem without having to search for an answer high and low.

EDIT: Just ran into a problem trying the DOS commands, would be thankful if someone could try it on a USB disk if it needs formatting or changing to NTFS, it may just be my PC playing up as im sure it had worked previously...The 32 to 64 ISO instructions should still work.
