Default OS for build...

I'm constructing a build this summer, and I got all the parts planned out; now the only thing is the Operating System.

I hear people going on about how good Linux and Mac is, but seriously, they're not for me. The only thing I used from day 1 was a windows, and I liked it.

I had several suggestions. Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 when it comes out.

My friends also said something about a backup system...?

What should I go with? and If I go with Vista what version should I get? (I'm running extremely low on money)

Vista 64bit. Or if you can wait so long, then Windows 7.

Vista x64 is your best option I think for now, until Windows 7 x64 is full released. Try linux out it is a great OS, but if you game a lot you probably will have issues with that.

If I download the 32-bit windows 7 beta now, can I swap it out for a 64-bit full version later without too much hassle?
