Default Windows 7 not compatible....

Ok, so I have been trying to install windows 7 on my computer but it refuses to upgrade my vista. I have so much stuff that a clean install would require hours of work afterwards to get everything set up so that is the less ideal of situations.

The problem is that when I bought my computer It was a 32bit business vista on it in French. I demanded a 64bit ultimate version to support all of my ram. Instead of clean installing it, they just did some weird upgrade. Now my vista is an English 64bit version but windows 7 still detects the French 32bit version and refuses to upgrade because of language barriers. Anything I can do?

The microsoft blog tells you that a clean install is recommended, necessary, in most cases.

If you have enough room on your hard drive. You'll want to do a clean install of Win 7. It will rename the older Vista "Windows.old" and have all the info from it in there. Just make sure you don't choose "format" when you get to that option. Be advised of course that it's always best to have any important data backed up first. Unless you have important data backed up. You might not want to risk that. But these versions of Win 7 do require a clean install.

Yeah, you need to back up all your data on your current OS, then wipe the drive.

You have 400gb installed into your OS?

If you mean that there's 400gb of data integrated with the os partition, split your primary partition into OS and data and then you can keep your data safe while installing to the primary. Good luck.

How much space do you have on your disc?

W7 only needs 14/16GB for an install of Ultimate. If you can create a good enough partition (75-100GB) you can just dual boot for now and save yourself some headaches.

I ran it for months on a drive of 60GB. Haven't installed the RC yet though.

Just installed W7 yesterday. Using 1/2 of my Velociraptor for the OS and half of my Terabyte drive for miscellaneous and program files. Daemon Tools doesnt work well with 7 though, and get te most recent drivers (Graphics) for it BEFORE you upgrade/install.
