Default Windows Vista Installer hangs...

Hi Everyone,

I have a really weird issue on my computer. Sometimes when I'm working on the computer and it works fine and I decide to download some small program and install, the installer doesn't start up.

I checked task manager and each time I get this issue there is a "msiexec.exe" (which I know is the installer) file that stays 100 k and doesn't load past that, almost like it gets stuck and hangs. There is no CPU usage for that process either (at 0%).

When I try to end the task it doesn't let me and says "Access is denied". Then I am forced to restart my computer and once I restart it and load the installer again it works fine. It seems to be happening at random with some installs. I even disabled Norton Antivirus and SpySweeper and tried ending as many tasks as I could and it still wouldn't load the installer.

Can anyone explain why this is happening or what may be causing and how it can be fixed? I'd greatly appreciate any help/suggestions you can give me. I'm using Vista Ultimate 64-bit with Service Pack 2.

Thanks in advance.

Vista SP-2.
Did this occur BEFORE you installed SP-2?
I for one didnt install SP-2.
Could be SP-2 doing this.

To be quite honest I don't remember but I think it was also an issue then as well.

Some malware camouflage themselves as msiexec.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder.
Run malwarebytes and avg and check its status

I'm 100% sure it's not malware or spyware because I have Norton and SpySweeper blocking me from that. And I know that process only launches when I click to install a program (ones that use the Windows Installer) because I view the task manager and I don't see it up. And like I said, most of the time the install works but the "msiexec.exe process hangs" have been happening fairly often now and I was really hoping to fix them.

Honestly bud, I had the same problems on my XP rig. I had to end the process and then go into run and re-register the msiexec.exe /regsrvr32 and then it would work fine for awhile. I only fixed it when I did a format / re-install and then it hasn't happened again.
