I have the following configuration. The Win7 upgrade advisor reported that I need 20gb in order to install Win7 RC.
Disk0 C:\ - OS system partition - 16gb of 48gb free E:\ - App logical drive - 125gb of 183gb free Disk1 D:\ - Media primary partition - lots of space F:\ - Games primary partition, swap file lives here - also lots of space My first step was to use Vista disk management to pull 30gb from E:\ and then move it to C:\. But after shrinking the E:\ volume, I could't add it to C:\ - from the messages in the wizard when I was reallocating it back to E:\, I think because C:\ is a system volume. My second step was to try doing the same thing using GPart and, again, I was able to shrink the E:\ volume by 30gb but was unable to reallocate it to C:\. ![]() Without resorting to deleting partitions and completely losing data, what are my options? I've deleted pretty much everything that I can from the C:\ volume and I still don't have the required 20gb.

Use this: http://clonezilla.org/ Make a copy of your C: drive with it, boot off the windows disc, partition to the size you want, and restore back to the partition with clonezilla.
After that, you should be set. I know it's a pita, but it's better than a full reformat.

Thanks for the suggestion.
If I shrink my E:\ partition and then delete the C:\ partition, am I guaranteed to be able to make a new C:\ partition with all of that space?

I figured out how to get GPart to do what I wanted it to. Just posting this in case someone else has this problem and does any searches...hopefully it will help them out.
Because my E:\ partition was a logical drive, I had to select the dev\sda2 (I think) partition...basically it's the level above the actual E:\ partition, which I was selecting. From there, I shrank it by about 50gb which took about an hour or so. Then I increased the size of my C:\ system partition using that unallocated space. Like I mentioned before, the trick is to make sure to select the item highest in the hierarchy to make sure the entire logical disk is shrunk, rather than the partition on the logical disk. It's subtle but it took me about 4 hours of trial and error since the process takes so long before figuring it out. Hopefully this will help save 4 hours of someone else's time.
