I could do with a hand here as I've never tried this before. I'm using XP Pro.

I'm setting up a user account for my brother (11) on my PC, I want him to have a limited account and no access to any of my stuff.

I've set his account up as the Limited type no problemo, I have also set my user accounts' My Documents folder status to Private so that he cannot see it. I am now wanting to set my secondary HDD to private so that he can not see that drive and anything it contains, but when I go to the sharing tab and try to tick the "Private" checkbox, it is greyed out. After a quick google - it is said that this means that the drive is formatted to FAT or FAT32 but I know for certain that the drive is NTFS.

I'd rather set this up without using any 3rd party software if at all possible.

Any ideas?

Is this Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro?
You might want to try disabling "Simple File Sharing". This gives you more access to permission settings and what not and this will help you out with your issue.

Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab > Simple File Sharing
Make sure it is disabled, and then you should see a permissions tab when you right click files and folders and select properties.

Yeah I've done that, I'm now looking at the Security tab and pondering over the permissions.

As the Deny permission overrides, even other groups, does that mean for his account I want to deny for Users - that then still leaves me with access.

I have the 4 default groups;

Admins
Authenticated users
SYSTEM
Users

I'd guess my Admin account falls under both Admin and Authenticated? And his under Users and Authenticated?

You can set up permissions on a user level.

Click Add and then type in his user name.
Give him the permissions you want him to have.
Add your User, giving you full access.
Then remove the Users and Authenticated Users permissions.

As a side note, permissions are a pain in the ass. If you screw them up, you yourself may not have access to the file(s) afterwards.

If you do screw them up, you can always bring them back to default, but you will have to set that up manually.

IE: Take Ownership > Force All Permissions to Administrator User Recursively > Go from there.
