Default Making Hotmail default e-mail in Win 7?

I'm trying to make Hotmail my default e-mail in Wndows 7, so when I click an e-mail link it opens up Hotmail and created a new message, but right now it only opens a Choose Program list and I can't find Hotmail for the life of me.

I've tried this method, but it gives me a "Vista only" message and Compatibility Mode doesn't help.

Anyone know how to do this in Windows 7 64-bit? I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

This is normally done within the web browser that you're using, but I looked for it in Windows 7, and I think I found something that might help (that is, if doing it through the browser's settings doesn't work for some reason).

If you haven't tried doing it through the browser's settings, then which browser are you using, and can I guide you through the steps?

But, here's at least how to do it in Windows 7:
  1. Open Default Programs.
  2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
  3. Scroll all the way to the bottom. Look for "MAILTO". Double-click it, and see what options it provides. The chances are good that it won't list Hotmail, but I'm taking a chance here.
However, I have a feeling that this can be done through the browser, but there's a chance that it could be a tiny bit tricky. But not really.

Edit: I just discovered that this is how it's done for Internet Explorer 8. But this probably doesn't apply to Firefox. And if it doesn't, then it needs to be done from within Firefox's options, and I know right where it look.

I'm using Firefox 3.5. I've looked in options for Firefox but it still wants me to choose an application to open the e-mail link with, and from what I've seen there isn't an actual .exe to link it to for Hotmail.

You're right: unfortunately, there is no actual software for it. However, I've read that Outlook Express can be configured for Hotmail. It was supposed to work for Outlook 2002 as well, but it didn't. However, I have never used Outlook Express.

You may be able to use Outlook with Mozilla Thunderbird too.

I suppose I'll check out Thunderbird, since Microsoft dropped Outlook Express in Windows 7.

Thank you for the help!

Oh yeah, they did didn't they? I just noticed. I kinda like the lack of Outlook Express because now I don't have to go and remove it.

Hmm. Click here. I'm going to continue doing some research though:

Edit: I found another thing that confirms that Thunderbird can be used to check Hotmail:
Quote:
Can I access my Yahoo!, Hotmail, Lycos (Europe), MailDotCom, Gmail, and Libero WebMail account through Thunderbird?
Yes. The Webmail extension integrates web site based email accounts into Thunderbird, allowing Thunderbird to download and to send emails using the web site. Some services may require a subscription for this type of access. Current information on the Webmail extension, supported services, and other add-ons for web based email can be found at the WebMail development site.

I'm still looking, but it looks like this is the answer.

Edit #2: Here's another page with some pretty detailed instructions and possibly better alternative methods to access Hotmail using Thunderbird:

How to Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Mozilla Thunderbird
