diatec, it may be too old of a system to run XP effectively. Maybe Windows 2000, but probably not XP.

Xubuntu ftw.
I'm pretty sure Xubuntu will use just as much resources as XP. XP isn't that resource intensive.

I have used ME and I didn't ever have a problem with it. The system restore was a wonderful addition, and out-of-the-box USB support was helpful.

As far as XP, this is a 300MHz CPU with 56MB ram. I need the serial port to work because this laptop is for a mechanic who needs to connect it to a diagnostic computer.

Yeah it will. Xubuntu will still run like crap and not to mention that installing it is such a pain. Even with the alternative installer.

To the OP. ME was so bad that they never bothered to make an SP. Either way an unofficial SP would just include patches and hotfixes from MS themselves all just compiled.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...=95012&lang=en ( product info .)

usb or a type 2 pc wireless card seem to be the logical choices for internet , besides dialup ( who uses that anymore ? )

honestly 98se or an nlite'd version of xp would be a better choice than win ME .

what type of automotive diag. equipment ? i work as a tech and most newer units / adapters will have a higher min. spec than that laptop .

Honestly, I'd just go and install Ubuntu/Kubuntu, or straight Slackware without the desktop environment if you are brave enough to tame the terminal. I don't know if it'll interface with the serial port well, but, if it does, I guarantee it'll run better than if it did with Windows ME on it.

I seriously doubt that his specialized automotive software would work on Ubuntu...

Auto software tends to be extremely picky. Win XP seems to be the weapon of choice for automotive diagnostic software...doubt that there's much linux support among the manufacturers.

Should I take the chance and install XP Pro or just leave the Win98 (I have no restore cd?)

He paid $200 for this laptop a few weeks ago. He wants to get more memory for it. I almost laughed myself hysterical. Yeah... I'll just run out to BestBuy and pick up some SDRAM. I told him it would cost more to upgrade it than it's worth. But I guess what goes around comes around. Customer gets ripped off by greedy mechanic....mechanic gets ripped off by greedy computer salesman.
