I am trying to help someone fix their computer. My xp home cd is shot. They have a legit xp key on their laptop and i only have a xp pro cd. Can i use the xp pro cd to install and then use a xp home key to activate it? I thought i remembered this working for vista, does it work for xp too?

It depends which service pack XP the key is for, and which Service Pack comes pre-installed on the disc. If both the key and the disc are SP2, it might work, not 100% sure.

If you have a legit copy of windows sp(whatever) then just download that iso, burn image and there you go.

It doesn't matter what service pack you have. In XP, keys aren't tied to service packs.
You might get problems if the key is for say, XP SP2 and you get a vanilla XP disc or SP1 disc, but I highly doubt it. But you can't cross match Home/Pro keys with the other iso/disc. What's more important here is downloading the right iso. If the OS on the laptop came preinstalled, make sure you download an OEM version. If it was purchased and installed after, get the retail version.

A XP Home Key will not work with a XP Pro disk, and a Pro Key will not work with a Home disk.
Also, a Retail Key will not work with an OEM Key, and an OEM Key will not work with a Retail disk. For SP Keys, older keys will work with newer SP disks, but newer keys will not work with older SP disks. So a XP SP1 Key will work with a SP2 or 3 disk, but a SP2 Key will not work on a SP1 or plain XP disk (the key had not been created at the time of the disk being made). For a legit Download of XP Home SP3 (Retail), go HERE.
