May sound like a stupid question, but what is the difference because I know theres a pretty big price difference between the 2. What is the upgrade in comparison with the full...say I want to do a clean OS install and format my harddrive, can I do it with the upgrade version or do i need the full?
thx

Legally speaking and technically, you shouldn't be able to use the upgrade version to do a clean install.
However, google is your friend. *cough* double install method *cough*

Add to your statement... "on a new (virgin) hd." On the double install method. I think people are getting false positives. Here's what I've found. 1: Upgrade media can be used to do a CLEAN install. 2: It appears that a MS OS has to had to be installed at some point. 3: RC_7100 can be used to keep the installer "happy". 4: Persons reporting the Vista trick works I think are getting false positives. (Installer is able to scan a formatted drive for a previous MS OS install.) DETAILS: Ericeod posted on a RAID 0 setup he was UNABLE to install (activate) via upgrade media (a digital download) on a *VIRGIN HD. (NEW) * Same machine using "used hd" that had right before the install a MS OS on it he WAS able to activate. He had deleted the RAID, and formatted the drive right prior to the install(s). (*On the virgin drive he was only able to install after he installed WIN7 to it by a full disc IIRC, and then formatted it) The point of this is it appears the upgrade installer is able to scan recently formatted drives for a MS OS. If it finds whatever it's looking for you are able to activate. If not it still allows you to run the initial install but will not activate (This is not surprising since formatting a drive DOES NOT ERASE files... the data is STILL THERE.) TwoCables reported that on a new FALCON SSD hdrive that he was able to successfully activate and the drive had ONLY had RC_7100 on it. More info, linky to the 3 methods of doing a fresh install via upgrade media. http://www.overclock.net/windows/594...ml#post7560537 Someone do this to verify if the installer is seeing previous OS installs: On a new or virginized hd. Try the methods above and see if it will activate. EDIT: 1 Week Ago I made the above post, No Reps for the info and no-one has bothered to post back if the installer indeed scans the hd for tell-tale signs of a previous OS install... Nor has anyone verified a install to a new /virginized hd... . Last edited by WeAreNotAlone : 2 Weeks Ago at 11:17 PM |
