Well, I will buy one in next couple of days and I am curious what people chose to be their OS these days and why. I will probably go for OEM home premium.
Thanx for understanding

I am currently using Ultimate x32 on my laptop, and am totally impressed. Over the next few hours, I'll be prepping my desktop, and doing a fresh install of Ultimate x64.

I chose Ultimate for a few reasons, none of them really important. What it really came down to was a great deal, and the e-peen of 'having it all', even if I don't need it all. Plus, I had Vista Ultimate, so it seemed the logical choice.

You're welcome!

Here are 3 very, very excellent comparison charts that helped me pick Home Premium over the more-expensive Professional and Ultimate editions:
I chose Retail over OEM because I want the full freedom and peace of mind of being able to upgrade to a new motherboard without any problems. I mean, I was able to take an OEM copy of XP Pro SP2 from an old pre-built Gateway (500 MHz Pentium III) to my sig rig without any problems (the phone representative didn't see a problem with it, even though it is against their EULA. I guess she doesn't know the EULA). But, I am worried that Microsoft might not be so lenient with Windows 7 - especially when I'm going from one modern system to another instead of going from a really, really old one to a modern one as before.

So, going with Retail gives me the peace of mind that I'll be able to re-activate it on a new build without the possibility of a phone rep saying "Nope. You can't do that with OEM. Our EULA clearly states that we do not allow a user to retire a system and then re-activate that OEM on the new system which is replacing the one that's being retired. So, I'm sorry, but I cannot allow this."

However, we know their phone reps don't care, so we will probably still be able to take an OEM from one system to another (retire the old, begin using the new with the same OEM copy). Either way, using Retail gives me that peace of mind.

And also: I went with the Upgrade DVD because I learned that a completely full, clean installation after a fresh format was absolutely possible. And as I found out myself, it is indeed possible and very easy. So, be sure to go for the Upgrade DVD.

Two copies of Pro. I got them through MSDN so they aren't OEM, but they technically aren't retail either (I was actually going to ask Futureshop if they could give me one of those empty display boxes)

I wouldn't mind having a display box either. Then my Windows 7 box wouldn't have to sit hiding in a drawer.

Well, I have all my drivers discs in my cd booklet so why would I need to show it on the shelf?

i plan on getting Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Upgrade (Retail)

for my rig below, but i probably wont use it until i get them 2010 Upgrades in my sig
most likely i wont resist and end up installing it anyway

i also plan on getting a macbook laptop next year, so i can triple boot Mac/Windows/Ubuntu
and i'll be using Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Full Retail on that, i probably wont end up using Mac or Ubuntu OS much, but nice to have that to play around with

reason i am going with Home Premium, is because Ultimate was a total waste of money for me, don't really need the extra features it offers, and Microsoft fell short of the Ultimate Extras promise, few mini games, dream scene and bitlocker, what a disappointment
