Well I bought windows 7 upgrade through Itsnotcheating (google it) and got win7 pro upgrade.
I have it installed from a clean copy but it wont let Me activate it Because it says "this version of windows is for updating an old one only" LIKE WHAT THE HELL. When i bought the Win xp upgrade I could just put in a win 2000 CD and it would let me install from a freshie. Is there anyway to actually install and validate windows 7 upgrade from scratch on my new HDDs. Like I bought these Hdds So I didnt have to mess with my Other HDD with xp on it because it might take me a bit to get used to win7... Would calling m$ and telling them my story work? Because there was no warning AT ALL that you couldnt do that.

i bet you booted from the upgrade disk and did a custom install
__________________you need to start the installation from a previous version of windows to be able to do a custom install (clean install) and have the key accepted by activation how ever since Windows 7 is installed atm, just start the install again but this time from within windows, and do a custom installation, you should be able to activate it then

for the upgrade key to be accepted, you need to start the install from within windows and go into the installation process and then select the custom install (clean install) or upgrade methods, then once it's installed it will accept your upgrade product key

I just used an OEM Windows 7 Pro Upgrade edition for a fresh install from Windows on an old XP laptop, just to reassure you that it does work. Just remember not to put in your CD Key when it first asks for it. Wait until you are fully into Windows and go to your System page at the bottom, then click activate.
