Hi everyone,
I just installed Windows 7 and quite like it. Just in case I didn't like it, however, I kept my previous XP install on a seperate partition on the same hard drive. I'm not too computer savvy, and I am having difficulty removing the XP partition and adjusting Windows 7's boot loader so as not to have two options. I ultimately want the boot loader to go straight in to Windows 7. When I try to erase the XP partition, Windows 7 says I can't remove an active partition, but I don't know of any way to make it inactive. ![]() Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance! |

you have to edit the boot.ini
go to start, type msconfig in the search, then in the msconfig, click on the boot.ini tab and click "check all boot paths"

Thanks, but that doesn't really help. Vista/7 use BCD instead of boot.ini, and that doesn't address the issue of not being able to delete the old XP partition!

EasyBCD (a FREE app) will allow you to edit the bootloader. Once this is done you can remove the XP partition. EasyBCD http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 *Note, there is something to be said about editing the bootloader to make WIN7 the default OS that boots and KEEPING your old XP partition for troubleshooting purposes. Run EasyBCD and just make WIN7 the default, change the time the bootloader screen is displayed to say 5 seconds on boot instead of 30... ![]() . I use the Ultimate Boot CD and run parted magic from it (note you must have the v5). After running parted magic, click edit partitions button on the desktop, if it does not appear on the desktop go to the start menu, click system tools, and click Gparted. This will bring up a graphical representation of you hard drive assuming you have only one, if you have multiple HDs make sure the correct one is selected in the upper right. Right click your XP partition and click delete, then if you wish drag the edge of your windows 7 partition to fill the rest of your drive. You will now need to click the Apply button on the upper toolbar. Gparted will then apply your actions, shutdown and you should boot straight to your newly enlarged windows 7 partition.
