Even if you can get stability on an OC I have a feeling this problem will keep plaguing you.
it boots with out an overclock....im on the same rig that wouldn't boot with a oc right now.

how would overclocking mess up my os? im getting a new HDD soon, ill do a clean install of WIN 7 build 7600 on it, and slowly merge.

unstable OC by the looks of it. When was the last time you ran the CPU for 24 hours in P95? I would honestly upgrade form here...Windows XP is basically dead now. I would reccomend going up to windows 7 ultimate x64.

i am going to download 7. im sick of XP's "comb" registry rebuild every time it boots. too much to go wrong.

Honestly, I'd love to understand why it does this as well. Fact is, when the system is unstable there is no telling what kind of crazy crap happens. The most obvious sign of an unstable OC is not POSTing, but it's not out of the norm to experience OS loading as well.

An unstable overclock may result in corruption of data files for any number of reasons:
  • The initial install may be fine, but when trying to read files back the SATA/IDE controller is perhaps subject to some kind of electrical interference (EMI, voltages out of spec, etc...) and the data being read back is corrupt
  • The install was corrupted because the read-out of the data from your install media was fine, but when written out, the same problem(s) (EMI, etc) caused a corrupt data write on the HD.
  • Your controller may be fine with the overclock, but if the CPU is being operated out of spec (voltage too low, for example) then it may process what it thinks is fine data, but turns out along the way to be incorrect somehow.

These are just a few of the reasons I could think of. It really does boil down to the fact that an unstable OC can result in a host of other issues that are only resolved by reverting to stock or carefully analyzing when you reach a stable OC.

It happens all the time. I've had several bad file boots with a bad overclock.
It just happens. Don't ask why, just fix it.
