will normal games like hl2 and doom and programs like microsoft word 2003 and photoshop work on windows xp pro x64 edition?

I wouldnt go as far as to say totally compatible...when I had it installed and tried to install executive diskeeper, it wouldnt let me.

You will need 64bit drivers for all your hardware, id suggest finding 64bit drivers for your hardware and save them to a disk before you install winxp 64.

Also keep us posted im thinking about WinXP64 myself.

I'm running x64 right now and have no problems. Like was stated above, though, make sure you've got all of your drivers before you install. They can be a pain to find.

I play HL2, Doom3, and many other games just fine. The Far Cry 64-bit patch is amazing on x64. Valve updated most of their games to support 64-bit, too. I've got no complaints.
