Well In generall this can be due to damaged OS files. To fix this issue please insert your Windows XP cd into your main drive ( You need the same OS disk as the one you used to install your current operating system ) then go to the Run command and type ''sfc /scannow'' this will now go throug a procedure of replacing all missing and damged OS files that can cause this. If this does not sort the issue then your PAGEFILE may be set to clear everytime you restart or shutdown windows. I will look for a remedy for that. Another problem could be a Virus or spyware so scan for them to be sure. As for programs to scan for a virus or spyware i reccomend the following
1. Spybot search and destroy
2. Ad-aware
3. Microsoft Defender
4. AVG anti-virus
