So I just reformatted my friends old IBM computer, this reformat was a little different since the boot order was not in the bios but rather in its only little startup key and once that was down it initiated an IBM console that just reformatted for me without my need to delete the partition.
__________________Anyways everything went fine since I got a fresh version of Windows but what is strange is that every time I startup windows I get these options: Please Select the Operating System to Start: Windows XP Professional Previous Operating System on C: Windows XP Installation/Upgrade The first just boots to windows and everything is fine. The second I have yet to try And the third just boots of the disk or appears to. Is there any way I can remove the two others? What is the cause of it? Thanks.

There are two ways:
__________________1: Right click on my computer and choose properties>advanced> under startup and recovery, choose settings. From there you can either edit the boot.ini file manually or turn off the boot menu. 2: Edit the boot.ini manually

The cause likely is that you did not re-partition the hard drive, but you just reformatted it. Somehow, some information in the Master Boot Record remained and ended up in the Boot.ini file (The newest Windows install thought there was an existing install).
You likely can remove it by editing your boot.ini file. Go to folder options, and under the view tab select "show hidden files and folder" and uncheck "hide protected operating system files". Then go to your C drive, and you'll see boot.ini in the root. Make a copy. Then open boot.ini , and you'll see something like this: Quote:

Anoother reason to why this sometimes happens is that with IBM harddrives there is a partition where Windows setup files are kept so reinstallation of the os can occure if it gets wiped.
