My simple connection comes up like this.

BenQ 22" 2200hd Lcd.

360 > Hdmi > Lcd > Analog out > Z-5500's Virtual dual speaker L & R for technical "stereo" effect.

Yes it's still possible. The thing is, regularly it would just be fine to hook up your component wires to the back of the xbox and just use the red/white cables for sounds, while using HDMI for video. However, when you hook up the component cables to the back of your 360, it covers your hdmi slot.

To fix this, you can try this:
http://www.chadledford.com/?p=50

Therefore there will be enough room to hook both your hdmi cable and regular A/V cable into the back of your xbox.

so basically, i have to hook up both the HDMI and Component cables, but only use the Component audio cables (red and white) and leave the the video component cables (reb, blue, green) unplugged? while routing the HDMI cable from my xbox 360 to my TV for video

Yes. To use the red/white cables with your computer speakers, that's where the guide on the first page comes in. Also remember that you wont be able to fit both the Microsoft Component cable and an HDMI cable in the back of the xbox without doing the mod in the link above.
