Default xbox 360 controller detection problem

I'm trying to use my Xbox 360 controller (from my console) on my PC. I'm pretty sure I can use it, but not 100% positive.

That said, when I first plugged it into my USB, the thing found the software and installed it, but when I tried to play Prototype with it, it wouldn't even show up.

Then I went into Device Manager and looked for it, but it didn't show my 360 controller as a detected hardware.

I even tried installing the driver manually from the microsoft site. I'm using Windows 7 btw.

Any tips or information would be appreciated +rep, thanks.

first, is it wired or wireless? If it is wireless, how are you connecting it to your PC? If you're using a play and charge kit, it wont work. You need a wireless adapter for wireless controllers. If it's wired, then i dont know whats wrong

Awww.....It's the Charge Kit one on my wirelelss controller. I figured it was hard wired. Guess not...How much is a wireless adapter compared to buying a wireless receiver?

I can play games through my Play & Charge kit on PC. Win7 picks it up as "Xbox 360 Controller Play & Charge" or something like that.

Yeah, it came up saying that, but for some reason I can't find it in device manager. It installed the driver for play & charge. If you can play, then why can't I?

Did you use the correct driver?

I'd double check USB Controller in Device Manager and it should show up, try to uninstall and then reboot and plug-in.

Follow the plug-in-play and it should work, that's what I did to get mine working.

did further research on google about this and it seems that using charge and play kit doesn't send the information through..so I don't see how you're all playing with the charge and play kit for wireless controllers. Guess I need to buy a hardwired xbox 360 controller.
