Default XBox 360 overheating?

I noticed that theres some people who have issues with their XBox 360s overheating. I also think they may have had them in the vertical position.

I think I know the cause of this. The 360 has heatpipe cooling and heatpipes only work in certain positions (see my FAQ for more on heatpipes). When the 360 is vertical the heatpipe isnt in a good position and the CPU doesnt get cooled as well and thats what causes it to overheat.

So as long you keep it horizontal it should be fine.

Where did you find info on the 360 cooling? I'd like to see the actual cooler.

No then it wouldnt work right. It needs to boil off and condense the fluid inside to keep it cool. Its in my FAQ

The water cooled term is being used loosely; actually it is a heat sink constructed of a copper base, aluminum stamped fins and copper heat pipe. The heat pipe contains water and a vacuum is pulled on the pipe prior to sealing.

Water under a vacuum boils at a lower temperature than at atmospheric pressure, so when the water boils and becomes steam, the steam rises and moves the heat higher into the fins where the air flow from the fans can extract the heat more efficiently. Once the steam is cooled it condenses and flows back down the pipe as water to the copper base of the heat sink, which is attached to the processor to continue the condensing and cooling processes cycle.
There.
