Default xbox....

so i sit at home all day long for the time being and pc games are only fun for so long, howver the only other thing i have to do is play my dads original xbox 1 (not 360) but....when i put a disk in it it just says disk unreadble on every disk no matter if the disk is brand new or a dvd. it wont play anything. we think the laser eye on it is bad. had anyone had this issue before? is there a quick fix like cleaning the eye? can i disassemble the xbox without destroying it? anything helps! TIA

I used to have the same problem on my old PS2, and it involved a lot of work trying to get the eye clean and realigned right so it would read disks, it was a pain in the a$$ but worked.

It is possible to disassemble the xbox by removing the screws, the only hard part is finding the screws because they are normally hidden under the rubber feet or other things.

i figured out the cd drive starts spinning to read the disk and immediately stops then repeats this process 10 or so times until the on screen display says cannot read disk

Easiest fix will be getting a replacement drive.

I have ordered the same type drive and just swapped the circuit boards inside the drives rather then flash them.

If you feel up to the task of opening your 360 and DVD drive you can try tweaking the pot and cleaning the lens.

I tried this a while back before just replacing with no success though.

If you see the lens is visably scratched you can just order another lens though and save a little money.

:edit: oops original xbox. sorry!

I had the same problem, but it was worse . My Xbox got bricked...... so I went to ebay and bought one that couldn't read disc's. So when it got to my house I hooked it up and popped a game in, unfortunatly it worked and now I had nothing to fix :P

Well it quit reading disc's later and I took it apart and cleaned the laser, it works like a charm now.

If you actually searched you would find that there is a wealth of information on the subject to be find via google...

You most likely have a Thompson dvd drive....they are notorious for dieing early and are just about all around horrible compared to the 3 other dvd drives that M$ manufactured with the xbox....again the Thompson drives have the highest failure rate...

You should be able to find a drive to replace it with via google...

I suggest you look into softmodding or hardmodding your console...it can emulate quite a few systems and has mame capability's as well...i remember running NES/SNES/GB/GBC/GBA/N64/PS1....PS1 and N64 struggled in a few titles but all of the others ran flawlessly...i know it emulates even older systems like the atari etc...it runs the sega systems as well - the dreamcast of course..

Loading up your console with an emulator or two would keep you quite busy...not to mention the many many other things you can do on the console when its modded
