I have a Falcon Elite, dating from June 2007, that I got free when my mum renewed her mobile phone contract. It has always been noisy, slow and sometimes unresponsive, but recently it started taking the piss somewhat, with it crashing to a black screen in COD4, resulting in no sound, and a mad vibrating controller that reminded me of that banned XFX advert. Dirt 2 does the same thing, but instead crashes, no sound, just an image of whatever I was last doing. The weird thing is, I can play ODST and Halo 3 MP all day long, but the FPS feels around 25 or so, slightly laggier than normal then. I am thinking a failing GPU perhaps? I run all my games off the HDD, I cleared the HDD, cleared cache, removed HDD and checked for dust, nothing.

Now my last problem is, it is now out of warranty, due to there only being a 1 year warranty on non RROD issues. I cannot afford to shell out £60 or so for it, any ideas?

Help would be much appreciated, I planned to buy Forza 3 today!

If you are getting lag, then yes your 360 is dying. I recommend either doing a mod to get cooler air into your 360, or modding it so you have fans over the heat sinks like I did (BTW, this is the only way my $40 360 will work):




The GPU does not get enough cooling so it starts to soften the solder and cause the GPU to "unseat" itself.

I may open it up later and have a gander. Anyway perhaps I can make it RROD?

It is still under RROD warranty, so then I could get it repaired.

You could. but opening it will cause the warrenty to be void. One way you could RROD it to over heat it so much it no longer works. But personally I say to just let it die on its own. If it still works after the warrenty is up, take it apart, do the x-clamp fix, then put better fans into it. Hell, make your own 360 case

If you wanted to force the RROD then just wrap it in a blanket(bad idea)...NO put it in a very small sealed box that should get it hot enough...put it so the gpu is upside down maybe?

You could also try a hair dryer at the intake as well...just be careful not to seal your fate and melt some plastic...

I had very similar issues to yours OP but with graphics corruption instead of no sound whilst blasting away in GTA4. Then the dreaded 3 RROD appeared, after allowing the unit to cool down I switched it back on to have it freeze on the menu after about 5 minutes sitting idle.

After about 20 mins of arguing on the telephone I've ended up with a brand new sealed console with 3 year warranty.

It's best to let it die on it's own, then Microsoft are more than happy to either replace it with a new/refurb one or repair it.
