If Microsoft declines to help you, you could go on eBay and find a destroyed Xbox, no matter the problem, and get it because you only want 2 resistors anyway.

I was under the impression his warranty had already expired, or he would have just had it collected to be repaired when the RRoD occurred

Have you ever soldered surface mount resistors? They are very hardto do.
