I put in a DVD, Platoon, and played it on a 1080i max rezolution 40 inch plasma and tested it in the 360 using HDMI and component. Since that article the 360 got updated to use HDMI, HD DVD, as well as an entire new operating system. Needless to say I never questioned the playback even 2 years ago watching dvd's on it.

The reality is that DVD is not Blu ray or HD DVD. I thought it looked very good and the 1080i upscale over the HDMI was satisfactory. Honestly though its DVD, it's average quality to start off with.

I'm not sure what updates have done for the DVD player but I know before if you used the VGA and im assuming now HDMI cable, it will upscale the DVD.

My 50" HDTV only has component in, so the 360 is terrible at DVD playback. Looks horrible.

It looks fine though, over HDMI or VGA.

I'm not sure if I read this right but you bought a 50" HDTV that doesn't have an HDMI port or any of the other digital connections? Kinda a waste unless you bought it 2+ years ago.

Back on topic. The Xbox 360 has been updated like other posters have said so at it's current price it makes it a superb multi featured unit.

I think he meant the 360 is only using a component connection right now not that his tv doesnt have HDMI or VGA, I cant imagin a HDTV without at least a VGA connection. So he would be viewing DVD's at a 480p resolution on a 50 inch tv which is kinda small to be stretched over such a large area.

But another interesting thing is that the xbox cannot play the majority of my videos, even some of the divx ones. I need to use a program called "PS3" media server to get any sort of usable media streaming functinoality.

It works much better on the PS3 obviously though, but its a real disapointment at how the 360 lacks a proper set of codecs.

I have a launch console so maybe HDMI plays a factor here. I put the Underworld DVD into my fully up to date 360 again just yesterday and almost puked when I saw the result. HD DVDs are/were a different story. They look amazing.

Well if that was on an HDTV it is normal. It is displaying 640x480 on a screen with more than double the resolution. If you had it on an SDTV it wouldn't look as bad compared to the HDTV.

Kind of similar to what the 360 already comes with out of the box. When I explained this to her she was like well our warranty covers all the other colours as well.

I just wanted to ask if anyone else plays on two 360's and how you manage the downloadable content and other stuff when switching between consoles.
hmm i was skimming the other posts and i dont think anyone awnsered the 2 xbox thing yet =\ .. butttt i have 3 xboxs (used to have one in each room of my apartment for lan and game testing but now keep them at friends houses) i would just go to each consoles and do the download again options for downloadable content =] since you dont have to pay for it again =]

hah but that sales lady gave me a laugh "it covers all the other colors as well" .. *sigh* wow.

Ya for now I'm just going to be just bringing the hard drive up and swaping it when I want to play my game saves. Its a 120 gig hard drive so it's has everything I need.

The memory cards are a bigger rip off than the hard drives though, and so far I havent been able to find any official cards in stores anyways.

But you really do have to watch out for sales people at stores like that, the only reason there pushing it is because they have to and they dont even know the first thing about the problems that the warrenty covers. Then if you buy it and something happens you bring it in and they tell you "oh thats your fault the warrenty doesnt cover that type of damage."

Actually, there is a update to the Video player on the xbox. You'll have to have it hooked up to your internet. I watch xvid's and divx movies all the time on mine. which is great, all I have to do is put them on my thumb drive, pop it into the front usb port, and go into Video's tab on the NXE dash, then choose portable device.

It will see the movie, but when you go to play it, it will say the media type selected requires an update to view. please sign into your xbox live profile and download the update. pretty simple really.
