2990wx overclocking

Build:

CPU: 2990wx @ 4.1Ghz all core 1.35V

GPU: 2x RTX 2080 Strix Sli NVlink stock air coolers

MOBO: x399 MSI Meg creation

NVMe: 2x 970 Samsung PRO 512Gb Raid 0

RAM: 32Gb (8gb x 4) vengeance 2400MHz, Clocked to 2667 (want to upgrade to g.skill royal)

Cooling: Hailea ultra titan hc500 (790watt cooling capacity)

PSU: 1300w seasonic prime 80+gold

Use: Sketchup V-ray hybrid rendering (GPU and CPU)

I am new to the forum and I have some questions about overclocking the cpu above the 4.1Ghz on all cores

1. I think im going to need to upgrade the ram probably to 3200Mhz cl14... Is there any point to oc it more with a ****ty ram?

2. How far can the 2990wx can go with the chilled water? is 4.5Ghz possible without going below ambient?

3. Is there any good guides for overclocking the 2990wx with voltages because not a lot of people push it past 4.1Ghz

4. Should the gpus also be watercooled? Thinking of Hard Tubing it in the pc with them exiting at rop of the back and having soft tubing from there.

5. What should be the next upgrade?

Looks like a nice build project ! ...try this thread; several folks there have oc'ed 2990wx https://www.overclock.net/forum/10-a...ners-club.html

And per your questions, 2080TIs will greatly benefit from (even regular) water cooling

Nice setup! I have a 1/2hp chiller as well. Unfortunately I am using it on a very different chip (9900K) but hopefully can provide some insights.

3C vs. 22C (ambient water) I can run about 200-300 MHz more before hitting a voltage wall. I top out at 5.6 1.65V. 5.5 only took around 1.45 or so. Most people on Intel run out of cooling long before hitting the voltage wall. I think it's a bit steeper on Ryzen from what I've seen so I am not sure if 4.5 is doable. I think 4.3, maybe 4.4.

You should have enough capacity to add the 2080s to the loop, assuming you want to stay above the dew point.

Pretty much, just need a lot of voltage to increase speed. Will be interested to see your results.

What are your temps now? What water temp?

That's very good re. temps. The biggest problem with an oc'ed 2990WX is its power draw...add in 2x 2080 Ti and you need some pretty hefty (or multiple) PSUs. I run a 2950X 16cr at up to 4300 @ 1.38v and that still uses around 300w peak...I reckon an oc'ed 2990wx 32cr can easily run between 500w and 600w, depending on exact settings.

Further, my two w-cooled Aorus 2080 Ti consistently slurp back 380w each (stock bios) at peak loads, so 760w total for just the GPUs. Then add PSU efficiency losses, plus peripherals. Finally, with a chiller running as well, you want to make sure that your computer room setup has plenty of wall-outlet capacity.

I would go for 4.2 and see what voltage it takes. Use a site like dpcalc.org to calculate your dew point. You would need a humidistat to measure the humidity in the room. Then you can lower the chiller temp more, just keep it a few degrees over the dew point.

So I have managed to get to 4.4GHz 1.42V,(I've spent 2 days fine tuning it and is fully stable) 890W power consumption during cinebench. Finally ordered the g.skill royal RAM kit so ill be switching to them tmrw. Now the chiller operates at 18C (also changed paste to thermal grizzly and the tdie is 58C.

I am kind of worried that i will degradate the mobo, psu and cpu even when im operating in normal temperatures so i hope i wont have to be lowering any of it.

Nice! Not sure how cold it gets in the winter where you are, but here, the winter cold causes the indoor humidity to drop to 30% or so. If that is the case where you are you could drop the water temp by 10-15c and potentially see an even higher OC.

I doubt you would degrade anything, 1.42V is a pretty standard voltage for overclocking the smaller Ryzens which have the same basic design. Plus, you probably aren't running prime95 24/7 or something like that

Any updates on that bad boy? Genuinely curious, want to pick up a Hailea and a 3990WX myself lol

Its runnin great for now but my goal is to get 4.6ghz out of it. Ive been making a new case for it with the chiller included so it will be done next week. then ill be overclocking a couple days probably to get the max OC. The chiller is great and i recommend it. nothing but satisfied with it
