Had hoped TR3 would be supported on X399, like Zen2 was on AM4. It would have been nice to get more use out of the ZEA, would also been great to see the board show improved RAM MHz like I gained with Zen2 on C7H.

When 16C/32T had been announced on AM4 earlier this year I had thought Threadripper 3 may not have such processor in the line up, seems so so far, which kinda puts the entry bar high for TR3 platform IMO.

2970WX was launched at $1299 -> 3960X -> $1399
2990WX was launched at $1799 -> 3970X -> $2000

Sincerely I can't explain it. Newer CPUs are faster and it's the minimum everyone should expect from a new thing, but why higher price if we have the same number of cores?

What might be happening is that they think they don't have enough CPUs. They might be afraid that if they set the price low enough, people would try to buy more than they can manufacture.

I tought the same, probably they don't have enough CPU from the binning process.
in any case for me is disappointing.

can't wait to jump in AMD boat again but not now, I can't admit to buy a new CPU with the same amount of cores of the previous with an increased price for both the cpu and the mobo.

intel has nothing at same level - my guess.

All of this to signal one person won't buy TR3 because it's too expensive for them.

Cool.

Lots of businesses that don't want/need enterprise grade gear to run compute heavy workloads that need a lot of memory and I/O. This processor isn't for you, clearly. I feel like this thread is proof AMD has got the pricing right. And if you think the 10980XE will retail at 1k, you don't read the fine print. That price is the 1k unit buy price. You need to buy 1000 units to get that price (RCP). Source: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us...-3-00-ghz.html (click the (?) beside Recommended customer price).

Because they are still making TR2. Not enough 7nm production to go around. Higher performance = higher price.

AMD is asking 10% more for:
~35% higher base clock performance (3Ghz vs ~4.15Ghz equivalent thanks to 12% IPC uplift)
~35% higher all core performance (3970X for sure boost 3.9Ghz all core).
And upto 100% better performance in some Windows applications that 2990WX suffered from.

So: do you still believe all of this not worth extra 10%? OMG!
for Intel 1%~5% performance uplift most of you happily paid EXTRA $$$ each year and now for massive improvement on AMD side you are whining for 10% price increase.

Look at AMD's earnings- they aren't Intel or Nvidia who makes Billions, they need that money to keep the R&D going, this is the time they can make some money to survive the next "Core2Due" from Intel, Do you want too cheap CPU's now and another 10 years with Intel Monopoly?

ryzen had a huge jump in terms of performance per core, we switched from 2700X to 3950X with some more money but double the core.
this is not the same for threadripper
