Need help on deciding on a cpu for my X570 Taichi.

So I have been happily using my Z97 rig for pretty much everything that I do with it since 2015, but the motherboard is starting to die (can’t run RAM at any speed, even stock without getting random BSOD’s at any given time). Normally I would just source out a replacement motherboard but I figured since its 2020 that would be relatively dumb.

So a few days ago I ordered an X570 Taichi motherboard in a bid to replace my current system and I’m stuck between two CPU’s, the Ryzen 5 3600X or the Ryzen 7 3800X. You might ask why not the 3700X, and that’s because I don’t plan on overclocking the CPU at all and I plan to overclock the RAM from its XMP of 3600MHz to 3733MHz-3800MHz roughly, so the higher boost clock the CPU comes with the better. I mean the 3700X isn’t out of the equation, but the higher boost speeds of the 3800X make it a more attractive buy for me.

About 90% of the time the system will be used for gaming, and the other times it’ll used for watching YouTube and the like (no real video encoding so I have no need for a 3900X or 3950X). I would really like the system to last me at least 5 years on the CPU side, but I also might get a cheap CPU (2600X) and hold out for Zen 3 at the end of this year. But anyway i’m just looking for some opinions. But I would prefer an 8c chip just to have future options if I do decide to do some workstation tasks.

The parts that i’ll be reusing from my Z97 rig will pretty much be my GTX 1080, my games storage drives (1 x 960GB SSD and 1 x 7200RPM Seagate HDD), my Corsair H100i v2 AIO cooler, my PCI-E wifi card, and all my peripherals (KB/M, monitors etc).

The RAM i’m getting is the G.Skill TridentZ Neo 2 x 16GB kit (samsung B-die) and I also wanted to know if I should get that or stick with this other kit I pulled out of my wife’s rig that her 2600X didn’t like (I think it’s a Ripjaws V kit specced at 3200MHz 2 x 8GB but its a Hynix MFR kit) is Zen 2’s IMC as picky and will I also have a hard time getting XMP to work with it or would it work as it should at XMP?

CPU’s I’ve owned: P4 630, P4 631, C2D E6320, C2D E6700, X3230, QX9650, X5470, i7 920, i7 3770K ES, Pentium 2020M, i5 4690K, i7 5775C, Athlon XP 3200+, Athlon 64 X2 1.8GHz, A10 4600M, Ryzen 5 2600X, Ryzen 7 3800X (soon to be)

GPU’s I‘ve owned: GeForce2 MX400, 8800GTX, GTX 285, 2 x GTX 660 SLI (sold 1), ATi x1300, R9 380, R9 290X, GTX 1070, GTX 1080.

3800X, benefits even more from extra memory bandwidth than 3600/X, thus gets even better in gaming. Make DOUBLE sure the Neo kit you're getting is B-Die, not the Hynix one. Forget 2600X as it doesn't come close to even 3600.

Yeah its a b-die kit, i’m sure because its 3600MHz at 16-16-16-36, and I don’t think any other chips can do that tight of timings. I think the closest I’ve seen was a Hynix kit at 16-17-17-38 or something like that.

My only thing is the 3800X is just out of my budget range, I mean I can make it fit in budget as I’m doing it piece by piece, its just convincing my wife is the hard part lol. So I guess its really 3800X vs 3700X without overclocking, and it seems like the 3800X is a more attractive option for me.

Okay so It wouldn’t be totally pointless going with the 3800X over the 3700X like it was when Zen launced with the 1700X vs the 1800X? Or is it realistically within a 5% performance delta and be better off spending $50 less?

The 3800x is a waste of money its a 3700x overclocked out of the box and its not worth buying the gains are tiny and not worth the extra cost

By the way i have the same motherboard and i hope you are not noise sensitive like i am because the chipset fan is super loud and annoying at speeds above 2500 RPM and it goes all the way up to 6000 RPM max so i truly hate it

If the X670 boards comes without a chipset fan the X570 Taichi is going to be given away to my best friend

That’s partially what I was thinking, though in my case since I won’t be overclocking the CPU at all and just be relying solely on PBO would it still be 100% pointless?

And nah I mostly use headphones so noise won’t be too much of an issue, though I suppose if it is I can just rig a noctua on there somehow. I ordered this board as I’ve heard other than that it’s a solid board. I was going to order the Aorus Master but I’ve heard a lot of conflicting reviews on it and it made me somewhat uneasy buying it.

according to Silicon Lottery the 3800X hit higher clocks than the 3700 with less voltage. They look binned to me.

  • 3700X - top 21% hit 4.15ghz at 1.262 volts.
  • 3800X - 100% can hit 4.2ghz
  • 3800X - top 20% hit 4.30ghz at 1.300 volts.

Mine is fine other than sometimes it just refuses to boot and have an 0d error which means i have to clear cmos and then it works fine again which on top on the fan is another reason why i hate it

This was not even my first pick as i bought an Asus Crosshair VIII Hero which turned out to be broken so i returned it and got another one that was also broken so i got fed up and i switched to the Asrock which at least work most of the time other than the random refuses to boot

And no you cant rig a Noctua on top from what i understand
As for the 3700x its fine i have not bothered to overclock it either

I’ve heard a similar story for the Aorus Master but instead it completely erases whatever overclock settings you have saved on every boot and just reverts to default.

Yeah I refuse to buy any ASUS made motherboards for the fact that i’ve never had a fully functional one, and their customer service is a complete joke.
