Help for 2nd-time Builder-- how much RAM?

Hey OCN,

This is only my second build and its been a while (6+ yrs). It's a budget build, let me know what you think. Also is 16GB DDR4 enough or is 32GB standard now for gaming? Suggestions/corrections welcome & appreciated-- Love to get some feedback from more xperieced builders. Thanks in advance.

16GB is considered the usual capacity now, and I wouldn't bother with any "advice" saying that you MUST get Samsung B-die because you really don't. The extra bandwidth Samsung B-die gives you over other ICs like Micron Rev. E or Hynix CJR/DJR/MFR at the same frequencies due to tighter timings is very small (around ~5-6% from what I'm seeing in most cases) which isn't going to be noticeable in anything except benchmarks. It's not really worth it considering at equivalent capacities, B-die usually costs like 60%+ more than other ICs.

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 AF (12nm replacement for the 14nm Ryzen 5 1600 "AE"; basically a Ryzen 5 2600 but for $85)
Motherboard: MSi B450M Gaming Plus ($90, $70 during sales)
RAM: Least expensive kit of Micron Rev. E you can find (usually $60-75; the 3000 and 3200MHz variants of the Crucial Ballistix Sport LT are the same binning, just look for AES near the end of the part number)
HDD: Same
SSD: Least expensive Phison E12 + Toshiba BiCS TLC drive you can find (full list in SSD subforum) at the capacity you want.
OS: Go get a Win 10 key from a reseller for like $30 instead. Use the money you saved to upgrade to a 1TB SSD or something instead or just to buy the next week or two of groceries: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...heap,5717.html

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Yv6x27

The RAM you just use the Ryzen DRAM Calculator to get timings you need at some given frequency. It doesn't take very long since it's literally copy paste and run a memory stress test while you're AFK (you probably don't even need to if running the safe profiles). Micron Rev. E seems to be the IC that places the least strain on the memory controller and tends to clock very high (at the cost of some looser timings which isn't really a big deal here).

buy a Windows 10 key on eBay or Kinguin/G2A/Daxter/wherever else and save ~$100. I'd put that $100 into a 3600 but up to you.

If you don't know if you need 16GB or 32GB then you don't need 32GB.

32GB is fine, and you don't need to pay the B-Die premium if you're setting XMP & going. You won't notice the +1 difference in timings, despite what the shills and morons on reddit tell you.

also, I'd recommend using PCPartPicker.com.

and yes, "buy a Win10 LTSC Enterprise key" from EBAY for $5-$10, thank me later.

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.

Hi,
Indeed ebay has plenty of win-10 pro/ home for 20.us that work just fine and even some retail but point is 109.us for win-10 home is silly sorry I missed that one
Besides ebay even if you get a key that doesn't activate just report fraud seller/ refund and get another.

The 10 LTSD enterprise is one that is hard to nail down though.

I would go for the new 12nm 1600 if you can find it. A 1600 refresh. But it is basically a lower clocked/binned 2600. But its $35 cheaper.

Also the HP EX900 NVME is around the same price as the WD blue. If you want to make the jump to NVME.

i've yet to have any issues with any ent key I've purchased from ebay, & even if you did... $10 for another one... I wonder if an expired ENT key would eventually downgrade you into a home key, thus pushing all the bloat and BS you avoid by installing ENT? if not, then assuming the watermark doesn't bother you, it wouldn't even matter. You've paid $10 for a truly clean win10 install (be sure to license the OS during OS install, not after, or you'll get the shart. I think this is a common mistake people make. You wanna authenticate your license before installing the OS, so you don't get the freeware version of the OS, which is loaded down all sorts of garbage, including candycrush)

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.
