3970x optimal radiator surface area?

Just curious if there is any additional cooling to be gained if I were to add an additional slim 360 radiator up top to help cool my 3970x.

My current idea is to run a single thick 360 radiator in front with the 3970x being the only heat source in the loop. Case will be a fractal design Meshify s2.

...depends on a few things such as 'what (if any) oc are you planning to run', the typical ambient temps you have, the CPU block you mounted, the available space in the case and of course fans you're using (<> noise sensitivity). For stock and/and pure PBO settings of your 7nm 3970X, a single thick 360 should be more than adequate, IMO.

I run a 12nm TR2 2950X with an all-core oc of 4.3GHz, which takes it from about 180w stock to 280w oc under full load for the CPU. I use dual thick XSPC RX360 rads in the CPU-only loop (GPU lop is separate) with dual D5 type pumps...dual pumps aren't absolutely necessary btw, it is mostly a fail-over / peace-of-mind thing. My CPU temps under full oc load are typically in the 60c range and might touch the low 70s in the hot summer months thanks to the HK IV Pro block and the dual thick rads.

Additional headroom? Maybe, but I doubt it. It really depends what your current loop is doing now. Is the coolant getting on the upper end of the temperature range? What is your block choice? Pump speed?

Lots of variables to consider.

For my particular use case I run a Heatkiller IV Pro block, D5 Next pump at 100%, and a MORA3 420 w/ four 200mm fans at 800rpm.

21C Ambient temp, 24C coolant temp at idle, and 28C Coolant temp after looping R20 for a few hours. 4450Mhz 1.375V

Until real world testing has been done, there is no guarantee that paying more for this block will give you better results than the already king of Threadripper blocks, The Heatkiller IV Pro

To add additional information.

I plan on using the Optimus absolute water block, not sure what 360 radiator to use. I hear the hw labs 360gtr is the best thick radiator up front. Was considering adding a second hw labs 360gts up top. Case is fractal design meshify s2.

Will be using the ekwb reservoir pump combo. Only 3970x in loop, no gpu.

I'd like to overclock the 3970x if possible.

Hi,
They are doing pretty good on Intel for myself on just the foundation against HK 4 Pro and Jpmboy koolance 380i/ MrTOOSHORT not sure what he had before and people are still coming so not sure what you consider real world testing
Not earth shattering but considering the shipping costs 30 euro for just wanting a copper cold plate on a HK 4 Pro the optimus foundation wasn't all that much more.
https://www.overclock.net/forum/61-w...l#post28261118

Jp's foundation first install you'd have to read a little to see the eventual improvements
https://www.overclock.net/forum/5-in...l#post28271598
Long story short with a signature installed doing very well with high/ low core temperature spread within 10c of each other that is not normal

There is also this post 45-48 only 2c increase per multiplier jump HK could never do that !

With an overclocked 3970X 32core, it makes sense to add a second 360 rad if you have the space. Even though 7nm TR3s are very good re. power consumption, adding vCore etc for an oc obviously has a big 'core-multiplier' resulting in extra watts and thus heat energy. I also understand that with TR3, PBO alone (rather than 'all-core') will react really well to the extra cooling and reward with extra performance, sometimes outstripping 'all-core' at non-insane voltages. But in either case, more cooling is better if you have the space.

Re. rads, I mostly use XSPC RX360 V3 (x55) rads for many years now w/o any quality issues, and very good performance. Rad choice also comes down to the fans (and their speed, and thus noise) you plan to use, given that different rads have different fin spacing impacting on ideal fan speed and pressure.

Want better than normal results? Buy a waterchiller

A few degrees up or down don't do wonders. So 1 or 2 360 radiators, or different cpu water block don't do much.
