Upgrade 1500X to 1700X/2700X or wait?

Hello

I know I know, another upgrade thread...

I am current considering an immediate upgrade or 2yrs wait so seeking advice here.

I have been running an OCed 1500X on B350 M for 3yrs, and now coupled with a VEGA 64LC also heavily OCed. I mostly use this Rig for Gaming and some low to mid multitasks from time to time

Games are mainly Simracing titles like AMS2, ACC or PC2 or 2D platformers/ FPS like Crysis3 or BF series.

The GPU output display on 2 different set-up, a 3 1080p 75Hz Freeesync monitors(as close as it can be from 4K) and a 720p Plasma TV wher I usually use AMD DSR to 1440p.

I am happy when I run these games titles in the 60 to 75fps range and on the Triple monitors, Freesync helps when fps dips down to 42fps which is the lower limit of my my monitors.

I feel somehow the 1500X even heavily OCed sometimes bottlenecking the VEGA or not dealing well with multi threaded games.

And I have managed to get my CORSAIR Vengeance RAM to clock at 3133Mhs vs its 3200Mhz so wondering if new CPU would help to push it higher

I am thinking 2 path

1) Now going for a CPU swap to 1700X/2700X without changing the MB, 2nd hand price in Japan market where I live are around 150/160$

2) Wait another 1 or 2yrs and just replace the CPU/MB combo with B550/3700X when 2nd hand prices will be the same I see today for the 1700X/2700X

Do you think I would see a real benefit with what I called the "immediate upgrade"' or I should test my patience and wait for going ZEN2?

Thanks so much

wouldn't switch to the 1700/2700. With Zen3 around the corner the Zen2 prices might fall a bit more. Get a mobo/zen2 to boost your fps.

Shouldn't the B350 support Zen 2? Or is the issue price? I ask because if you're willing to get a new motherboard and CPU later, just getting the CPU alone now shouldn't be more expensive than both later?

I know you're looking at gaining cores/threads, but I'd also try and make the jump from Zen to Zen 2 at least rather than Zen+ if at all possible. If price absolutely prohibited that, I'd try for a 2700X over a 1700X. While IPS (IPC) gains have been incremental for the most part in recent years, I'd try and do more (even if a little) than just add cores/threads when making an upgrade.

thank you

I am trying to upgrade on the cheap yes. New PC gear like CPU, MB and GPU are 15 to 20% more expensive here in japan compared to US, which is annoying considering most of them are produced next door in China or Taiwan, so 2nd hand is what I will buy next.

My MB would be compatible for a 3700X yes but its a basic ASROCK PRO4 and I am conscious about its VRM limitations hence the B550 Option instead.

Zen2 CPU offering on the used market is rather sparse, I have not seen any 3700X except damaged pin ones.Maybe with Zen3 launch there will be more offering but I guess its another 4 to months to wait now?

Are you aware of the new Ryzen 5 1600 "AF" 6 Core/12 Thread processors? These are Ryzen 5 2600 processors being sold as the 1600 at an excellent low price. Here in the U.S. they sell for around $85 and are one of, if not the most, value for the dollar CPU's made in the last decade.

Might be something to look into. The price especially makes these a very easy choice for those of us waiting for the next generation of Zen processors to be released.

Yes i was aware of the 1600AF but its not sold in Japan. I saw some on the 2nd hand market but they were in the 1700x/2700x price range so value for money not really happening over here

I am going to test my patience and wait to see in the next few months what Zen3 do to the Zen+/Zen2 2nd hand market prices.

Since the 1%lows is really what I want to improve,I am going to work out how to extend my monitors Freesync range especially the lower end that is capable of 48Hz by specification

If I can reduce this lower end to say 42 or even 40Hz I believe I could improve my Gaming experience until a proper CPU/MB replacement takes place.

Cheapest route is staying with the B350 and find a newer R5 3600. The newer samples seem to oc higher, which would make it not far from the new XT.

The XT and the newer Renoir (8-core with Vega) will be the last upgrade path for the 300 series motherboard. The Renoir is rumored to be as fast as the 3800X at stock and might be cheaper than the XTs.

By Built-in Benchmark Queen:
My 2.5 years old delidded 7980xe @ 4600mhz all core with 49ns memorylatency (4000c16 twekaed) is faster than 3950x max overclocked on water in every scenario. Pretty good for a ancient cpu
In gaming it has no chance vs my new 10900k @ 5400mhz and 4600c16 tweaked memory. ~35ns memorylatency.

Wait until AMD releases zen 3/ryzen 4000, and buy a (cheap) 2nd hand Ryzen 3600.

Your board will handle 3600 just fine, and for gaming R5 3600 will be enough for you.
With r5 3600 you can push your ddr4 above 3200MHz, IMC of Zen 2 is way better than Zen 1 IMC.

yes decision made to wait indeed. I managed to extend the lower end of my FREESYNC monitors with CRU still working on new radeon drivers so lets see what happens with ZEN3 nd 2nd hand ZEN2 prices later this year.thanks all for your comments
