PC won't boot standing up - Crosshair VI Hero

Posting as a separate thread to hopefully get some more help, hope this is okay and that I am in the right forum section!

Hi all, am glad I found this forum! been having issues with this board since I received it over a year ago now.

I had bench tested it all fine, then installed it into an NZXT H440 - The board itself 99% of the time just doesn't boot - with Q code 8

Googling comes up with no resolution and it seems a lot of others have this issue: https://www.google.com/search?q=asus+q+code+8

Now, what the issue is exactly? I don't know. I thought it might be my ram (Corsair CMR / Vengeance RGB 3000MHz) but what I do know is that TURNING MY PC ON ITS SIDE allows the PC to work like absolute normal...?

That's right, for a year I've used my PC sideways on the floor and taken my case apart multiple times just to look if anywhere was grounding out but there's no issue I can see anywhere.

Has ANYONE heard of this issue? HOW do I fix it? I really wanna stick my PC upright again.

Spec:

1700X @ 4GHz 1.375V (issue happens at stock too) - Coolermaster ML240 AIO w/ 2x Corsair ML120s
2x8GB Corsair Vengeance RGB + 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX @ 3000MHz (tried them both separately, issue happens the same)
Crosshair VI Hero - BIOS - 6903 (happened on every bios prior, I originally thought it was memory compat so I had a beta bios with the latest AGESA at the time installed to it previously)
M.2 PCIE Samsung 970 EVO 250GB
NZXT H440
a gpu
EVGA 750W G2

TLDR: PC won't boot when it's upright, boots fine on it's side. Q Code 8. Halp.

Thank you in advance
Magic

Sidenote, does anyone know how to change the monitor the bios displays on?

Hi! Welcome to OCN. it's unfortunate to see your first post coming here for help lol.

I did some small digging around. alot of it has to do with the board getting bricked it seems with that Q code 8. But you proving that it works when it's on the side and not standing up, sounds like hardware issues somewheres.

seems Q code 8, not 08, doesnt even bring up POST.

what i'd try is, reseat your CPU and confirm that you arent cranking down your AIO to as tight as possible. Just make sure it goes down firm.

check your CPU pins (just out of habit)

make sure nothing is out of the ordinary and go down to just one DIMM for troubleshooting purposes for now and see what that does.

Originally was here looking to see if 7002 Bios was out yet

Tried a single DIMM many times and no luck there

have loosened and tightened the AIO and no luck there either

I will order some more paste and do the pin check. Makes me wonder if the top row of pins don't fully make contact or something...?

and yes, no POST when standing Q code 8 (not 08)

Cooler pressure on CPU, bending stuff. GPU sag, etc.

What if you rotate it while it's running? LOL. RIP.

Try a minimal system first. Check for water leaks, nothing better than an AIO dripping onto the board when upright.

Something is coming lose when you stand it up.
Double check everything and start it up on its side then stand it and see if anything comes loose.
That’s the most likely explanation

Try new power supply? Perhaps pin issue on 24-pin or CPU power connector.

sounds like a short somewhere, that is only showing itself when things start to sag.

as stated above, re-seat CPU, & make sure slotted devices are properly set.

sorry for the delay. not on purpose but I try to pop on more than once a week anymore.

if it's no POST, that's either 1, bad motherboard (which seemed to be the issue) or bad CPU.

now confirming it's a bad CPU is my absolutely last resort to rule out.

I've only seen 2 in my desktop years actually be bad and in the last 3 years, I've seen 4 Xeon's go bad at my current job lol.

it's not often I say that.

but i'd definitely replace the motherboard first if you cannot get it to POST to confirm if that's the true issue.

Your GPU is massive at 1582 grams and long. C6H has reinforced PCIe slots but the card may sag and lose contact.
Try to boot horizontal, then turn the case up while holding up the GPU (watch your fingers as fans spin fast).
Alternatively can try the second PCIe x8 slot. Another alternative is to add GPU support cradle.

Multiple monitors BIOS screen - usually on port closest to the board, and GPU (if multiple) closest to CPU.

Error codes for C6H I found don’t match the manual, but do somewhat match BIOS codes from X370 Taichi manual (I had both).
