Will a PCIE 4.0 GPU work with this mobo?

Hi all,
I built a system for a buddy with a Ryzen 5 3600+MSI B450 Tomahawk Max. The motherboard has PCIE 3.0 and he plans to get an AMD GPU RX 5700 XT which is PCIE 4.0. Will this work ok?
He will initially play at 1080p but in the future thinks of upgrading to a 1440p display, always a single screen.

Cheers,
AC

epic card for 1080p, decent card for 1440p the friend should be stoked. it's also more than enough power to have peripheral monitors (up to 4) he could even run 3x 1080p from that one card, span, and still get a solid 60fps with high settings at a combined resolution of 5760x1080p, or 3240x1920 (landscape/portrait)

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.
