Nvme

I have an Asus 970 pro gaming board. I'm using an AMD fx8350. But anywho. I would like to use a nvme storage device to boot from. But the board won't allow it. So my question is if I get an nvme expansion card will it boot from there?

There's probably an add-in expansion card that's compatible with that board, but it's not really worth the cost over a good SATA SSD. Best bet would be to buy one of the many cheap, reliable SSDs currently on the market, and save the extra cash towards a full upgrade.

Edit: looking at the specs on that board, it shows to have a single NVME PCIE 2 x4 socket in the lower right corner. It doesn't have an integrated heatspreader, but it would probably be alright with decent case ventilation.

Thanks for the info. I was just curious about nvme add-on cards and boot capability. The slot on the 970 is just storage not boot. I would have known that if I would have read the manual before hand.

So what you're saying is that you already have an NVME drive but you can't set it as the boot drive when you install it directly in the board's socket? If so, that's a different scenario than I was expecting when I said to just get an SSD.

A quick google search shows this linky thing where several people confirm that the 970 Pro Gamer board does support booting from NVME. You may have to change some settings in BIOS, or follow the link in the discussion I linked to with directions for installing/booting windows on an NVME.

Correct. When I first put the system together the bios seen the nvme as storage and not boot. The link you posted only takes me back to the main menu of the forum. But I will Google into this and see how to change it.

wut... really? that's a new one for me. storage only on-board NVMe? N the manual highlights this?

using an adapter would be silly, unless its PCI-E based, and then would you wanna give up the lanes?

better off getting a genuinely quality sata SSD if there's really no way around that weirdness.

It may be something as simple as changing boot device priority. I got a corrected link posted so he can read through the instructions. I read through it enough to see that several people confirmed they could boot from an NVME drive with that board, so maybe he can find what's keeping it from working for him.

it just doesn't make sense.

put ISO on a usb, make usb key #1 boot option/force that boot option, go thru windows install, select NVMe, format it, then select it as drive = win.

i've never seen that not work O.o! even our $500 bottom barrel laptops @ work use NVMe boot drives.
