Trying to diagnose my cousin's pre-built remotely

Hi all,

Trying to figure out how I can understand what's wrong with my little cousin's pre-built "gaming" PC.

He's had this machine for a while: HP Pavilion Power 580-108no
Spec sheet: https://support.hp.com/ie-en/document/c05868446

I finally got around to playing a little Overwatch with him, and midway through a game his machine froze & crashed.
He came back online & told me this was a regular occurrence for him, so that's got me wondering what could possibly be causing this issue?

Other than drivers of course.
I'm also wondering, if I bring him up a new B350/B450 motherboard & 500W PSU, would that likely alleviate any issues?

Any thoughts/help welcome!

*edit*
This review has me thinking airflow could definitely be a factor:

Look in his system's logs with event viewer and check for critical or error events at the time it shut down, if it can it will try to tell you what's wrong.

I would check temps first. It might just be dirty inside.

However a 300w psu for a system with an RX580 is kinda strange. Not that overwatch is extremely demanding. But you might be hitting close to that 300. If i remember correctly the RX580 uses like 200w+ and the R5-1400 uses 100w+ during gaming.

Doubtful about fixing remotely, nature of issues.

Questions i'd ask though-

Has Bios been updated ? Components re-pasted after rough transport? Reinstall & avoid feature updates?

https://www.askvg.com/how-to-prevent...in-windows-10/

or some newer drivers from an updater on Steam, or somewhere like Iobit db6 ?

(HP makes too many to support, and Windows drivers are often legacy choices)

& if factory SSD has HP partitions, i'd put away for safe keeping & buy new and clean install W10

(known to cause stutter/freezes from these partitions)

RMA even wouldn't be bad, may get a newer one? (only a guess, have doubts)

Typical suspects are drivers or faulty ram, motherboard or videocard.

If it blue screened (rather than just instantly froze) there are dump files with useful info. Blue screen analysis software like the one linked below can be useful.

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

ALSO -try and get him to log what was happening when it freezes to attempt to establish a pattern. I have had several cases in the past where the crash was actually caused by a thermostatic fan heater on the same powerboard creating power spikes when it switched on or off. I also had another client who had unexplained crashes for months that was not solved until one of the office staff casually mentioned "you know it does seem to mainly occur when the guys out back fire up the arc welder" .

I would suspect a power supply deficiency as well. Does it only freeze when gaming, or browsing etc?

And as asked before, blue screen or just frozen? Blue screen is likely software related.

Yeah it's not BSOD (sorry wrong parlance) - his game will hang/crash.

Sadly he's in another country so I can't take a look at it in person yet.

Hi,
Add hwinfo and monitor the readings doing some basic benchmarks

https://www.hwinfo.com/download.php

Cinebench R20 is okay and pretty short but should give a good idea of temperature readings.

Otherwise free 3DMark is also good Fire strike and time spy should give it a nice workout.

Get pictures of the inside of the computer too.
