Go for Zen 2 or wait for Zen 3?

Currently have an Intel 4790k (Haswell?) platform for about five years now. Having an itch to upgrade, and now looking at AMD.

So today I could go for Zen 2 (i.e. 3900X + X570 mobo such as Gigabyte Aorus X570 Master). But Zen 3 is supposed to come out later this year along with X670 chipsets. I want to scratch that itch, but I also don't like the idea of buying something that will be superseded relatively soon (and yes I know, in the computer world the next best thing is always around the corner).

Also looking at all the X570 motherboards out there, the Gigabyte Aorus line is the only one that offers everything I'd need (it's amazing how few X570 boards have 2 internal USB 3.2 Gen 1 headers, as my case has 4 front USB 3 ports, so I need 2 headers for that). I've used Gigabyte in the past with no complaints, and currently using an Asus board. Reading though that the Gigabyte bios on the X570 boards kinda sucks (though not sure how big of a deal it really is).

Anyway, what's the smart thing to do here? Buy now, or wait? When I buy I don't want to have to upgrade for at least another 5 years again, so buying something cheap now and upgrading within a year isn't an option (and is just dumb, as that's throwing away money).

I haven't seen any particular reason to wait for x670 what-so-ever

If you want to upgrade, just do it.

But I'd also say, if you want to upgrade for no reason, don't

If you machine does everything you need it to do, then keep it.

You'll see a gains by upgrading now if you need more processing power

You just answered your own question. If Zen 3 is around the corner and you don't want to do a double upgrade, wait till Zen 3 drops. Easy peasy.

There are already X570 motherboards that don't require a chipset fan

Only one so far I believe, from Gigabyte, and it's $550. No thanks.

I recently went from a 4790k to a 3900x. It's a beast chip that handles everything I've thrown at it. Having so many cores allows me to replace a 2nd physical PC with a couple VMs so I can have my work stuff running separately while gaming or doing whatever. The only reason I see myself wanting to upgrade sooner than 5 years from this rig would be to move to HEDT for more PCIe lanes.

A Zen 2 build should carry you another 5 years just fine and are available now. If you can afford to wait a bit longer or perhaps a lot longer if their are shortages/delays, then by all means, wait for Zen 3.

Never wait for future hardware. Get what's the best and supported well today.

Future hardware sometimes never materializes.

Also with cutting-edge tech there's often driver issues/teething problems.

I've taken that jump a couple times, and it sucked both.

Even with help from friends, there's no data on how the stuff works. You are the pioneer.

I'm also interested in this new chipset BUT as usual, there is no release as of it yet and you do know that AMD driver support has always been atrocious on every level.

Not slamming AMD here because they will always be my PC hardware supplier. Intel will always be totally dead to me.
