New 3600 Build - Cooling Advice?

Hey all,

Hoping to get some feedback and advice about this build I'm planning to slap together early next week. I'm working with about $1700-1800 AUD, including shipping which my current build fits perfectly into. I was going to OC the GPU a bit, but I found a model that comes factory OC'ed so not sure if its going to be worth it.

Ryzen 5 3600
MSI B450M Mortar Max
16GB @ 3200mhz (2x8)
MSI RX 5700 XT Gaming X 8GB (personally, I think they should put a few more X's in it)
MSI Forge 100R Case
Crucial P1 M.2 NVMe 1TB
Corsair RM650 Gold

I'm pretty ok with everything in it, but I want to try and keep the 3600 as cool as possible. From what I understand the cooler it is the longer/more often it will be able to boost on single threaded tasks which will probably end up being a good chunk of the workload I throw at it.

Given the case has reasonably good airflow (2x 120mm intakes, 1x 120mm outlet, mesh front etc) I think the main weakness will be the stock cooler. So I'm looking at lower end air coolers that will hopefully do a better job and be a little quieter. I'm looking at the be quiet! Pure Rock for this, but open to any suggestions at or below the same price. Back in my day Arctic Silver 5 was the go-to paste, but open to suggestions on this as well.

I think the PSU is overkill, but I'm not sure where I'm going with this box in future so having an extra 100W or so seems prudent, especially since it's only costing me $10 more.

Other than picking out a cooler, are there anything concerns or limitations I've overlooked here?

Cheers!

Thanks for the ideas! They're maybe a little out of my price range but I'm thinking I might be better off sticking with a stock cooler for a while and then upgrading in a couple of months and getting something decent. The Noctua especially catches my eye, used many of their fans in the past and always been really happy with them.

Just a Mugen Rev.B will be good for the job.
No reason to invest on fancy Aircoolers or AIO if u are not planning to go heavy on Ocing.

  • Ryzen 3600x @4490mhz, Mugen Rev.B, v1.46, 3rd position at HWBOT
  • Gigabyte Aorus Elite x570

Honestly, the boxed cooler is pretty good. Its going be hard to improve on for less than 50 usd. Its only worth upgrading if you have plans for a higher heat cpu later.

If the case has good airflow and you're not going to overclock much, i would stick with the stock one. It really is good. Thats from a person with $1000 custom loop and denial of potential for stock coolers being ok.

Similar config R5 3600/16GB @3533 14-18-14-14

I Purchased a similar config, though i went with Asus Prime X570-P ($123 USD) just to get the X570 chipset in case i'll need PCIe 4.0 one day (my last personal rig lasted for 7 years!).

For cooling, get the super cheap Gammaxx 400 ($21 USD) more than enough as the 3600 won't overclock, but you'll get a good 15-20 Celsius better cooling than the stock AMD cooler (noisy at high speed!)

The RAM is the most important choice you have to make. I've tried a couple of sets and chose the Ballistix Sport LT 3200 ($75 USD)... i could push it to DDR4 3533 14-18-14-14 @1.45v with infinity Fabric @1766 and using fast settings with 1usmus Tool and his (complete and complex) overclocking guide... you'll find plenty of videos and guides on how to do that, but 1usmus Tool is a must!.... LinusTech says if you can push your infinity fabric to the max (1800+) a simple low latency Kit (CL14 or 15) of RAM works as good... no chance for me with my 3600, it couldn't go to 1800 but works @1766

Guide -> https://www.techpowerup.com/review/a...locking-guide/

Spending more on that config is nonsense in my opinion... no need for expensive RAM or Cooler, waste of money, save it for a good Graphics card and a good PSU (your choice looks good).

Warning: Apparently Asus BIOS doesn't work well with odd tCL timing... i could only work with tCL 14, 16, 18, 20, 22...all odd number were rounded up. The Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000 CL15 ($78 USD), highly recommended with the R 5 3600, did not do any good for me on that Asus mobo.

Finding the correct settings to overclock your RAM is a tedious process! Don't give up and try ALL the combinations from the 1usmus tool and play a little bit around them... it took me a good half a day to find the correct settings and pass all tests, and i'm 10% away of the optimum speed the tool is telling i could get from the Micron-E chips i got, but don't forget the chips you get are kind of a lottery, i just got a R5 not reaching infinity fabric @1800 (bad luck i guess) and the RAM did not go as far as suggested, but at that price, i got the best perf/$$ so far.

Hope it helps, good luck!

Corsair A500, pls NO. Check the reviews for issues and you will see quickly why. Not compatible as it has awful clearance for mobo components and it performs badly for how gigantic and heavy it is.

Edit & Redacted:
Might not be able to read, did you have everything and miss cooling - or you buy all right now ?
It wonders me, why you picked a mATX board into a big case

Hmm, except that a chunk of Aluminium doesn't only make up thermals and you are loosing boost after 50c on 3rd gen
Yea, depends rly if stuff is already bought or not

Well dang thanks everyone for all the feedback!

Just to clarify, I haven't purchased anything at all yet other than a Windows 10 key so this is 100% greenfields.

I've made a few minor tweaks to the build to shave off some $$ with a view to add more bits in a month or two:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($279.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Motherboard: MSI B450-A PRO MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard ($155.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($139.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Storage: Crucial P1 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($119.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Video Card: MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB GAMING X Video Card ($699.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Case: MSI MAG FORGE 100R ATX Mid Tower Case ($89.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Power Supply: be quiet! Pure Power 11 CM 600 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply ($119)

Basically a different, regular ATX mobo and smaller NVMe which I'll end up supplementing with 3TB of rust in the near future. PSU is also a different brand, figured I won't need fully modular since it's going to be tucked away and hidden so no one needs to look at the spaghetti - also works out $40 cheaper.

Sounds like stock cooler will be fine for now. I'll run with that for a while and see how things look, easy enough to slap something more substantial on later. If I'm honest its 50% for performance, 50% because I don't like looking at stock coolers...
