friend wants a mid range gaming rig - hows this build?

so a buddy wants a budget (non oc) gaming rig that is somewhat future-proof between 900-1100usd (1300-1600cdn)

he currently has a cheap 32" LG monitor (not sure of stats) and may upgrade that to a 1440p 27" (he doesn't play fps at all so hz isn't a concern)

hows this?

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tQzzCL

- is the motherboard good enough for the 3600? is it missing important features for 'future-proofing'? is an MSI B450M Gaming Plus or ASRock B450M Pro4 better?

- are the 2 stock case fans enoug

- any issues with the build?

- he asked me about an intel cpu/motherboard and i said in order match the 3600 he'd have to step up to an i7 for hyperthreading and it adds another $200+ish

Coffee Lake i7 doesn't have hyperthreading, lol.

swap the motherboard for something like the ASRock B450M Pro 4 and otherwise it looks fine other than the 212. 212 isn't terrible but there's better alternatives.

here's a thread on OCN for better alternatives.

bit much to dig though but might be worth a watch

That's a bit more reasonable
Swapped:
- PSU (not happy but far better than what you had at the start)
- Ram (RGB version would be 10CAD more)
- Board (MSI mortars are out of stock, Tomahawk would be too big, gigabyte 3/4 lineup has voltage issues)
- GPU
- Storage (nearly identical, tiny bit less cr*p - needs higher budget for better things)

added 2 fans for airflow (120mm in case you ever want to go AIO/CLC)
Fractal Design Venturis would make more sense but overdo the budget
if you can sqeeze 1500 - then the whole story/build would be different

Thinking about RX 5700 XT at this price range
2070 non super is a bit awkward and makes not much sense at this high price
2070SP is overpriced in Canada right now

Makes a lot of sense if you want to avoid the 5700 XT issues that are still present even though some XT owners hate to admit that. I wanted to play a game from 2015 today and I couldn't because It kept stuttering while GPU usage was in the 20-60% range and clock speed in the 1200s.

The EVGA BR and the 212 are both very mediocre and are not worth buying

Yes ultimately it depends on the Micron Memory and the board manufactures to fix it
No issues on Asrock's current bios - but 1004B made issues
Ultimately on that and on the memory you get on the 5700XT

Fellow Canadian go to Reflagdeals forum buy and sell some crazy good deals and you could build an awesome PC for your buddy. Here is just some video cards at low prices for example. Or just buy a built PC all put together.I am not selling stuff on redflagdeals ,just a heads up but the Gigabyte 5700XT for $430 Cad is a steal.

Gammax 400 is better and cheaper, the 5700 flashed to XT is faster than a 2070 (mine beats every 2070 + 3700x combo on firestrike)

3600 memory is only a little more expensive but zen 2 likes memory speed

I would pick a 3600x for $20 more. Since your friend doesn't want to overclock, the extra 200mhz base and boost clocks would be worth it. Also, don't get an aftermarket cooler as the wraith spire that comes with the 3600x is better than the wraith stealth that comes with the 3600 and more than sufficient. I just saved you $20 by ditching the aftermarket cooler and you get a better CPU.
