Manjaro install not working for HP Envy x360 with Ryzen 5 2500U

Hey all, it's basically all in the title. I just bought this lightly used Envy x360 with the 2500U and I tried to install Manjaro on it last night (using Rufus and dd, since burning an .iso no longer works for Manjaro) and it would start to boot the live environment, then I'd get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left and no errors or notices or anything. Not sure what's up, but I ended up installing the latest Xubuntu 18.04 since it worked just fine. Since it's Raven Ridge I'd much rather use a rolling release... anyone had an experience similar to this? Any insight? TIA!!

Some isos don't get along with Rufus. Universal USB Installer is another good one to try if you're creating it from Windows. You could also dd the iso to the flash drive from Ubuntu or try the built in utilities.

I've had a blinking cursor due to unusable install media (iso incorrectly written to flash drive), grub issues (bad grub install or unusable grub.cfg) or less often, critical incompatibilities (eg: GPT/EFI boot on BIOS/MBR system).

After the blinking cursor appears, I'm assuming you waited a minute to see if it boots? Sometimes it takes a minute, especially with a flash drive.

Hey Heathen! I originally burned the .iso but that failed 2 times, I read up on Rufus and apparently the Manjaro people decided not to allow FAT32 filesystem compatibility or somesuch? Anywho, I then did dd the .iso to the drive and I was able to get the live USB boot menu. I selected the Live environment option and it started to boot!

Then part of the way through the boot it stopped, switched to that black screen, and stayed there for many minutes. I walked away to do something, came back after almost 10 minutes or so and it was still on that black screen. Tried to maybe jump into another TTY, but that didn't work. So I shut it down and tried again, about 3 times. None of that worked so I installed Xubuntu 18.04.

I'd like to use Manjaro, it's my favorite and I love the stable rolling-release they offer, especially with Raven Ridge. I will try creating the Live USB drive with Universal USB Installer tonight, see if that makes a difference! I do have that on my computer, but I've been using Rufus due to its small size and speedy operation. Worse comes to worse I'll create the drive from Xubuntu... maybe I'll do that first before trying with Universal USB Installer in case that works out...

Thanks again! I'll give it a shot later tonight and report back.

Had similar happen with my system. None of the distros I tried would boot. They would get the menu but once beyond that it would be a black screen.

Turned out I needed to use the nomodeset boot parameter for the install and for the first actual boot. Once I activated the proprietary Nvidia drivers, it booted fine. Worked with Mint and Kubuntu -- not sure if this would work for Manjaro (or your setup) though.

What kernel is the Manjaro install medium using? You need at least kernel 4.15 for the APU.

It's using 4.16.x right now. I'm using Antergos now since it boots into live environment without an issue... :/ Ah well, I gave it the ol' college try!

OK everyone, thanks for the input! I never got it working at all with all your suggestions, so I just ended up installing Antergos with XFCE and this is quite nice. I like it! I'll be sticking with this for a while. My next step is to get an NVMe drive to use, and I'd like to just swap the install from this spinning disk onto that new drive, but I may need help with that. Thanks again all!
