The Windows 10 Club

On October 1st, 2014, Microsoft made the Windows 10 Preview available to businesses who wish to try it and the general public. This club will be updated with more information as the products nears, and completes development.

On January 21st, 2015, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to all Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. thumb.gif

On August 3rd, 2016, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update began going out to computers. This update added a number of new features and removed some features from Windows 10 Pro.

New Features:

-Virtual Desktops
-A more classic Start Menu
-Full Screen Task switching
-Snap Assist
-Updated Command Prompt
-Windows Explorer improvements
-Continuum
-Universal Apps can be run in Windowed view
-And much more!

After that, use the Ms update tool to search for updates and hide the ones you don't want to install.

From this, I have complete control over when I search for updates and which to "download".[/quote]
On Activation (Click to show)
Things you should know:

• A Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key CAN activate Windows 10.

• By default, Windows 10 builds are pre-keyed, meaning, you do not have to enter a product key and should not be prompted to enter one as long as you upgraded from an activated Windows 7 or Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 license or Windows 10 Preview build.

• If you perform a clean install on first attempt, you will have to input your Windows 7/8.1 product key.

• If you are prompted to enter a product key, click Do this later and give it a few days, Windows 10 will activate automatically.

• There is no need to know your Windows 10 product key, read the following 'Understanding Product Activation in Windows 10:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki/insider_wintp-insider_install/how-to-activate-and-resolve-common-product-key/33f31475-93b3-4d1c-812f-4b21fbd807a7

Already up and running on my secondary PC.

Really really like the new UI, it's beautiful, really easy to use (Windows 7 users will love it), I'm already accustomed to the new way of using Windows 8.x, so I don't find myself using the new start button all that much, all I do is right click it, and I get everything I would want system-wise with 1 click (it's still there).

Seems really solid, just as fast as Windows 8.x.

As do I. I've got it running in Hyper-V and it's smooth as buttered glass. Very much liking what they've done here.

VirtualBox host here.
I'm already running the consumer x64 on my home PC (through TeamViewer)
And as we speak, I'm installing the x64 Enterprise version on a VM on my workstation.

This is the post with my impressions, I will also keep it updated (or try to) in the spoiler below

My thoughts (Click to show)
OK, I virtualized a x64 version under VirtualBox and installed the Guest Additions via Win8 compatibility.
VM Disk is on 7200rpm mechanical RAID 0, fixed size.

First impressions:

Negative:
  • The system reserved partition is still 350MB. Is this really needed?
  • In start menu quick-search, you cannot Ctrl+Backspace a word, you have to hold/tap backspace (or mark with Ctrl+A/Ctrl+Shift+Arrow).
Note: Issue is also present in many other places, including the Windows Feedback platform.
  • Task view switch hotkey?
  • Apart from being force-docked on the taskbar, Search and Task View are not movable around, and do not respond to [Start]+[1-9] keys.
  • [Start]+E opens a Home directory, rather than Computer
  • Folder Library still not removable from Computer
  • Adding a shortcut to Home directory works only when dragging it in the "Frequently Used" group, but then again, folders will always come above Shortcuts, even with grouping disabled (which is natural behaviour, but is very inconvenient in a Home directory I am forced into should I use the Explorer hotkey.

Positive:
  • The Start menu customization tool is very powerful.
  • System footprint is relatively low - 'Out-of-box' RAM load is 0.7GB after 10 minutes of usage (nothing installed whatsoever) and some apps used, including posting feedback and converting local account into on-line. With a couple of apps uninstalled, used disk space is 10.6GB (again, this is x64).
  • Apps are still very easily uninstallable.
  • WOOOPIEEEEEEEE!!!!! Abruptly exiting Task Manager (killing process/system crash/power outage/etc.) will no longer cause any visual customizations to be lost! The registry key is finally being read without being deleted upon opening TaskMgr!!!

I will update this list when I encounter more stuff.

Nice to have a new spot where we can discuss this without over taking that Windows 10 Live thread. Anyways, I'll re-post what I just put in the other thread.
Quote:
What's the reason for both the Search button and the Search (magnified glass?)

Other than the "trending now" appearing on the search (magnified glass) they both behave the same way.

Seems like a way to sneak in Bing search, then if you click on a result it'll open in your actual default browser. It's not an inconvenience in any way, just a hmmmmmmmm

QUESTION

What are you thoughts on this? If I have a bunch of Virtual Work spaces (or whatever you call them), if I click on the button to view them all and close out one of the workspaces, wouldn't it seem natural for it to close everything opened in that workspace? Otherwise, if you have 10 different applications opened in 5 different workspaces, close out 4 of them and all 10 applications are left opened on the remaining desktop. Figured if you're closing that workspace then you no longer need those browser windows, or word docs, or calculators.

Besides that, the workspaces tool works as expected. I'll have to see how well it behaves when I'm actually trying to multitask.

In case anybody was interested, you can move applications between virtual workspaces.

Do you know any shortcuts regarding the virtual desktops?
I am experimenting through TeamViewer and then VirtualBox, so it is a bit uncomfortable to test with various modifier keys.

Regarding your question - I find this inconvenient. Change of behaviour should be proposed. At least a prompt whether to move or close (with a selectable desktop to move the open windows too) the group.

Not to switch between the workspaces individually .

Alt+Tab brings up ALL of your opened applications, based on the application you select the workspace it sits in will open.

So if there's a workspace open with Word/Excel and the Calculator opened and you Alt+Tab'd and selected the Calc, you'd open up to those 3 applications.

Now if I was to have a suggestion, I'd suggest the ability to reorganize the virtual workspaces. I'd like to see them all and drag them into a different order. Just in case by the 5th or 6th workspace, if it's closely tied to workspace desktop 1 I'd like to drag them closer together.

I agree with the prompt. Would you like to close the applications? If "no" then they just get pushed into another workspace.
