Windows 7 on 3 PCs in this house that I built.

Windows 10 takes too much work and modification to be usable, less intrusive, and gut the spying aspects. My wife uses it on her new build, and every fricken' time we turn the PC on or off it has to "update". What a headache!

I will continue to sue Windows 7 until GPU drivers are no longer available for it, or all the new games are DX12 only (unlikely this will happen anytime soon). And of course, this will require that there's actually games I want to play that will only work with DX12 and/or newer drivers. Since I'm pretty picky, that means it will take something very good (e.g. new Elder Scrolls game...) to get me to switch.

There's also the fact that for quite a while, Windows 8 and newer was not allowed on HWBOT due to the bclk tuning bug involving the RTC. Since I still have a Haswell i7, moving to a newer OS would have disallowed me submitting many benchmarks to HWBOT. This is apparently fixed now but it was an issue going all the way back to the original release of Windows 8, and it seems was only fixed when Skylake CPUs came out.

I'm happy with Windows 7. It's very stable, mostly bug free, speedy and has less bloat. I've used Windows all the way back to Windows 3.11 when I was a kid and I think it's by far the best consumer version of Windows released. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and I feel that Windows 10 does not follow that. I've used 10 somewhat, and it seems like it's all the same stuff that was in Windows 7, just moved around in the interface for no real reason (see: two control panels). That is not an improvement, it just makes things daunting for grandma, my Mom, etc to find where everything went. There's also a big issue with Microsoft blatantly lying about the new OS, how secure it is, and so on in order to get people to upgrade from 7. In addition to the many forced upgrades and other underhanded tactics to get people to switch. I will not support a company that does these things.

yeah..

I running dual boot with windows 10 and windows 7.

my system seem far more responsive with windows 7 then windows 10.

like others have said windows 10 getting more bloated and more bloated with each major update.

who is asking for these added apps and things. not me.
I dont use photo apps, social apps..

they need to stop adding things. and start fixing things. such as background services running all the time, when they are supposed to be running when system is idle.
how can I do anything if compatTelRunner.exe keeps randomly running while windows search is running and superfetch massive disk usage for 5minutes straight right after logging in.

two days straight I was trying to defrag the drive, but it was having problems because all those things I listed was running.
probably better with ssd drives.

but as a non profit developer(yeah not making money yet) and also a gamer. I have over 10tb of games and data.

but windows 10 on mechanical drives is a killer.

this 2 times a year update release is too much for anything.
liked it better with service packs.
plus the all the updating/updates failing/having to do a multiple clean install to fix problems, that alone is hard on drives. and people stress level,LOL

I hate to reinstall. I try to avoid it much as possible.

As a white hat ethical security professional that uses multiple versions of linux for many different scenarios. I highly suggest Zorin OS as a easy way to transition from windows to linux. It has wine built in so installing windows programs and games that are supported will be just just as easy as windows. https://zorinos.com/download/ (scroll down for free version)

I'm usually on OCN.net on Zorin 9 OS. Granted it's older but it works and has been great for me, as I have it dual booted with my Win 8.1 install. I was referred by a friend who told me it was similar to a Windows setup and easy to use. You should be able to find a live CD download as that's what I put 9 on before proceeding with the install alongside 8.1. I think it was the lite version I found a live CD of, not sure if Ultimate or Core have versions or not

Edit: You might try sourceforge if the osboxes site doesn't get you what you need.

I was able to found out that the osboxes vmdk file wan't working with my vm workstation 12 pro [which i owned], now i found this tutorial > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_zFA7Jinqk and used the latest iso to test it on a vm and IT'S WORKING and looks like windows 10 !

Looks like it's gonna be installed on my system ! thumb.gif

I am far from a security expert, (hell, I may be why security experts exist smile.gif )but I echo your praise of Zorin. I am using Z12 as I learn my way around linux and I love it. The machines I had installed Mint on have been switched over. There may very well be better distros, but this one really eases the learning curve. My 10 and 8 year old boys prefer it to windows 7.

3 of my 5 active duty Windows based systems are on w10, 2 are w7.

I see no strong reason outside of DX12 for gamers to upgrade to 10 from 7 if 7 is already installed and working fine, but I also see no reason to perform a fresh install of anything other than w10 at this point unless your hardware harks back to the Windows XP era.

Both operating systems need considerable user tweaking and configuring to work optimally, but the process is faster on 10 and the end result is ultimately superior.

Of course, there are alternatives to Windows, and if your usage allows it I would suggest going that route.

Why not just use Windows 8.1? I find it to be more responsive than 7, more stable, and obviously it doesn't come with all the garbage of WIndows 10.

I refuse to install Windows 10 on anything. Everyone at my office uses Windows 10 and I am the only person running 8.1. They are always complaining about random updates. I don't have that issue.

The search is also faster on 8.1 than on 7 and Win10.
