Changed motherboard and Windows deactivated. Don't have the license tied to my acc

So here's the thing. Way, way back I bought a custom built computer from an online store. It came with W7 and that's the Windows license I've been using up until now (I upgraded to W10 for free). I used to have an ISO image CD from the store that I once applied to my current SSD, no idea if that CD had a key pre-installed, I think it did 6 years ago). I changed my motherboard yesterday (still using the same SSD) and to my surprise Windows was deactivated. So I thought, alright no problem I'll just contact MS support. But nope, no help there. They want me to re-purchase the license.

My license wasn't tied to my MS account (unfortunately) so there's no way of recovering it that way. So GG I guess?

GG, pretty much.

Grab a key on Kinguin for cheap. Home licenses are under $25. Then tie it to your MS account.

Or if you have a .edu email, see if your school is a partner with MS and you can get an Education license - which is essentially an Enterprise license - for free.

If you have an OEM license (which it sounds like), you're forced to buy a new copy if you got a new motherboard.

The OEM license is tied to your motherboard specifically. If you had a retail license you would still have been able to use it.

If you replaced the motherboard with the same exact motherboard they should activate it for you. Call them back if that is the case.

If it's a different motherboard then you are out of luck.

Alright, thanks fellas. That's really unfortunate. I had like a 15 min chat with MS support and they could've just told me that they can't reactivate it. Instead the representative leads me on to believe she'll sort it out for me, then goes ahead and says I need to add payment info lol and is going to charge me for re-activating it so I can enjoy "genuine" Windows.

But ya, will research if my uni has a deal going with MS, if not I'll buy from Kinguin. Thanks again!
