Two issues (Win 10)

Hi guys.

Would appreciate a bit of help with two problems:

Problem one:
I have two windows 10 machines, one is a laptop, one is a desktop.

I often sync files between these two machines via ethernet (Wifi is too slow and files too big. Has to be ETHERNET only)

IN order to ensure they don't sync through the wifi network - that they both share - i have to disable the laptop wifi. I then decided to bridge the wifi through the desktop meaning that the laptop -- while connected via ethernet to said desktop -- will also have internet.

It worked. At least, it does for about a day. Then the ethernet out of the blue gets no net connection, yet connection between the two machines is fine.

The only fix for this is, so far, is to delete the bridge, then re-create it. Rinse and repeat every day.

This is not feasible and just adds another step to an already overwhelming workday. I need a proper solution.

Problem 2: (Thrown at me today)

Desktop is suddenly not activated. Been working fine all year under a legit win 10 pro serial key and now i'm getting a desktop watermark to "Activate windows". This **** is why piracy exists.

After trying everything i could google, i bought another Pro key only for it to reject it on the grounds of "Something interrupted troubleshooting 0x80070057"

I tried a system restore, only for every single one to fail with an error code after rebooting.

Honestly. Contemplating suicide, or at least sending Microsoft a letter as to why they suck ass.

Reinstall is not an option. Don't have time for it and the vast quantity of data to be backed up....just, no, no way.

For #1 ... Set a static address on both of them that is different than your wireless network or if on Windows 7 go to Advanced Network settings (can do it in 8.1 and 10 but you need to do it through Powershell) and change the order of network protocol bindings so ethernet gets priority.

For #2 ... Start command prompt as an admin and type:

Quote:
sfc /scannow

see if there's any integrity violations or if it can even complete it.

If I am understanding your network topology correctly, here are two proper solutions:
Delete the bridge and simply use Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop with an automatically assigned IP on both devices. ICS will give your desktop's Ethernet adapter a static IP of 192.168.137.1 and make it a DHCP server that the laptop will automatically get an IP from. Right-click the desktop's WiFi tray icon -> Open Network & Internet settings -> Change adapter options. Right-click Ethernet -> Click Properties -> Double-click TCP/IPv4 -> Make sure both options are set to Automatic -> Click [OK] -> Click [OK]. Right-click WiFi -> Click Properties -> Click Sharing -> Tick Allow other users to connect through this computer's Internet connection -> Select Ethernet as the device to share through -> Click [OK].

Another option, since it sounds like both computers have WiFi and Ethernet, is to disable Windows File Sharing on the WiFi adapters, and set static IPs on the Ethernet adapters that will allow for wired data transfers while both devices are independently connected to WiFi for Internet. Keep in mind that this will make both the laptop and desktop's Ethernet ports only functional when connected to each other. You'll have to restore the Automatic IP/DNS option for either of them to work on any other network. Also note that this will render Windows File Sharing inoperable over WiFi on both devices unless you re-tick the unticked options.
On the desktop: Right-click your WiFi tray icon -> Open Network & Internet settings -> Change adapter options. Right-click Ethernet -> Click Properties -> Double-click TCP/IPv4 -> Set IP to 10.0.99.1 -> Set subnet to 255.255.255.0 -> Click [OK]. Right-click WiFi -> Click Properties -> Untick Client for Microsoft Windows -> Untick File and Printer Sharing -> Untick both Link Layer Topology Discovery options -> Click [OK].
On the laptop: Right-click your WiFi tray icon -> Open Network & Internet settings -> Change adapter options. Right-click Ethernet -> Click Properties -> Double-click TCP/IPv4 -> Set IP to 10.0.99.2 -> Set subnet to 255.255.255.0 -> Click [OK]. Right-click WiFi -> Click Properties -> Untick Client for Microsoft Windows -> Untick File and Printer Sharing -> Untick both Link Layer Topology Discovery options -> Click [OK].
If, for whatever reason, the laptop or desktop don't show up in your Network listing after this, manually type in \\10.0.99.1 to access the desktop and \\10.0.99.2 to access the laptop. You may also have to make sure that both PCs identify the Ethernet connection as Private so that the firewall doesn't block file sharing.
