Stop The Windows Update Service

As central as it is to the core of Windows 10, Windows Update is actually just another Windows process so it can be stopped with these simple steps:

1. Open the Run command (Win + R), in it type: services.msc and press enter

2. From the Services list which appears find the Windows Update service and open it

3. In ‘Startup Type’ (under the ‘General’ tab) change it to ‘Disabled’

4. Restart

I've tried this and it seems to be working, not sure why nobody has mentioned it yet. I tried both disable and set to manual, which for now I'm trying manual.

Windows will re-enable it for you, don't worry. All versions of home, and some versions of PRO. Only versions i havent seen auto turn it back on is enterprise LTSB... and 1709 version of windows 10 pro (every other version turns it back on so far).

The thread you made here is asking about the PRO Version of windows. Now all of a sudden it's about home?

If you really don't want it to run in PRO, do a combo of what i said and what you did... which is how i set mine up. Beware, somethings use the windows updater when installing... so some program installs will error out without windows update service enabled. I tend to re-enable it when running any installer now, just incase. The other option from the administrative templates makes sure it doesn't automatically start downloading and appying things while you are re-enabled for running your installer. Setting the service as manual will still let windows call it up when it wants to, it has to be disabled.

Home, you're just pretty much SOL. Ride that update train. Or constantly scramble to turn off the updater service when it starts trying to run on random again.

the update feature works but for a limited time If i remember correctly the latest builds have a bigger threshold to stop updates, also yes 1709 seem to stop completely the auto-start of update services and task scheduling but I havent tried other versions to find out

Also Windows added more than 1 service related to updates, and also programmed a task scheduler to make updates at certain time

It wasn't mentioned because most of us moved on to something that works permanantly. There's no point in manually doing any of that anymore when it will just change it's self back eventually. Plus you didn't disable the 20 other things that are also issues with 10. Oh well.
The one that re-installs the bloat ware is my favorite.
I literally have a .txt with all the main regedit tweaks, batch files and powershell scripts that all remove the garbage or revert settings. None of it matters because Windows will likely turn it all back.

What has been your permanent move? I'm in the process of checking Win10 Enterprise for Workstations licensing fees as well getting some confirmations on incompatible software as we're moving to the convergence point where some software will only work on Win10 and some software will only work on Win8.1 and pre and some that won't work on neither. It's become a terrible situation since neither Linux or MacOS are viable alternatives.

I feel an urge to get out of this cycle/trap. But there is no viable alternatives.

My solution is to use TinyWall to firewall off Windows Updates along with everything else that likes to call home when it doesn't need to. It even has a menu that lets you select what Windows components to allow or block.

This is a permanent solution that you need to install. Hasn't failed yet. I get to choose when to do my updates. And it works on Home as well. I refused to move to Windows 10 until I solved the telemetry and forced update problem. And this finally did it.

The catch is that it takes some time to setup. It blocks non-Windows applications by default unless you explicitly white-list it. For me, it was just a handful of exceptions. (browser, Steam, games + other misc. small things)

TinyWall has also has a window that shows all the connections that are being allowed or blocked. So I get to watch in amusement as all these programs (mostly Microsoft stuff) that don't need the internet try to call home and get blocked.

I never did anything on p-states. Though I can see how it could be mistaken for it.

Thank you for this, I'm very much like you, stuck with a windows 7 copy patched up to the telemetry updates to avoid being tracked and waiting for some solutions for Windows 10. I hate to upgrade to this turd burger of a OS but sadly everything is heading that way and apparently data and privacy isn't that important to people.

I'm actually just waiting for my 2TB EVO to get here and will keep my 256GB SSD for Windows 7/Linux installs (off-shot I can't control 10) and use the EVO for my Windows 10 / gaming drive.
