How the hell did you fall for that?
Happens to the best of us man.
I've never had a virus before in my entire life of using computers (coming up to about 15 years). The infected computer in question I use mainly for gaming, haven't installed anything in the last few days... Your guess is as good as mine.
Probably doesn't help that I've never seen windows 7 in repair or recovery mode

The only thing I wonder about is how people fall for programs they haven't installed themselves. I know what's on my HDD and if I don't recognize the program then I don't trust it.
To OP, it should be possible to get rid of it, but **** happens and you might end up having to reinstall completely depending on what the virus does.
I don't and did not run any program I don't recognise. I knew something was not quite right, which is why I didn't run the Repair 'tool'. How it got there is beyond me!

Knew this was coming xD
Windows Defender. Hey, I managed god knows how many years with no AV, and never had a problem. And yes, I do know that for sure because I'd every couple months download an AV and run it just to check. Then I'd delete after it had confirmed I was doing fine without one.

I fully own up to not catching on it was fake right off the bat. That is preeeetty funny I must admit
But, in my defence, I have had a really, really long day and am suffering from a recurring throat infection. Just before exam period too, so yes, I've been freaking out all day pretty much.
