Rain-X De-icer is around 35% methanol so it's a start If that still freezes, I'll locate some ethanol and cut it 50/50 with water.

Decided to try METH last night. Methanol, that is

And we have success! I saw as low as -23F / -31C on the liquid, with NO ICE. (Well, other than the frost in the picture below, but that's from the water in the air, not the methanol. Only problem is this stuff is toxic. I didn't feel safe with it in my house, so I moved it out to the garage. Even if I could seal the reservoir well enough, I don't feel like it would be safe to keep indoors. Methanol just evaporates too readily.

Based on the chemical properties, it looks like ethanol is the final ticket. It should stay liquid and flow easily at these temps in a 50/50 mix, plus be safe to have indoors in a big open top vat. Absolute worst case, might feel a little drunk lol, but that is fairly easy to detect and deal with. Not so much with methanol. Just trying to find a good place to buy the stuff, maybe as E85 or denatured alcohol. Something safe, excluding flammability - which shouldn't be too bad, considering the temperature and that it would be half (or more) water.

Happy to hear you're progressing. Just wanted to add that ethanol/methanol in the air is incredibly flammable and could easily be ignited by a small spark off your clothing or an open pilot light from your furnace. Just something to be mindful of but you probably knew this already judging by the project.

Looks good though. This is the kind of project I usually do haha.

EDIT: E85 changes gasoline percentage during the winter season. It is more like E55 or E60 at the present time IIRC. I used to run it in my drag racing cars for the higher octane and had to adjust for this.

Mixing ethanol or methanol with enough water should bring the flash point to slightly above room temperature

I will probably try to seal the system once I know it works. Otherwise, I'd lose ethanol to evaporation and have to add some regularly. Probably not more dangerous than the hydrogen I deal with on a daily basis (or the booze in my fridge, lol)
