About to take a leap on a menu.

My setup is fairly simple. An Ubuntu 16.04 server that boots to openbox, then normally launches kodi fullscreen.

I'm trying to add a menu to choose either Kodi or any emulators as I've had zero success getting the Games stuff to work within Kodi.

My goal is to have a fairly transparent menu that i can move up and down with a keyboard or remote programmed via lirc to a few keypresses. This remote would also control Kodi. The menu will be loaded in openbox. The menu options will launch either Kodi, or Zsnes at the moment (other emulators to follow). Needs to be able to call linux cli commands and be fairly simple to add. I'd like icons if possible. What am I looking for to accomplish this? I know nothing outside of bash scripting.

Ultimately the idea is a slick smooth scrolling menu that sits over the wallpaper. I'd like to use a custom font as well.

I don't know if I can do this with Lua, Python... no clue and no idea where to start. I think it would be a fairly simple little project but I have no ideas to start from.

*Major bonus points if I can find a way to control it with my tvs default remote over that hdmi protocol, forgot what it's called. One less remote is always a win.*
