Well, I got my schedule a while ago, but it's been confirmed: I'm into the Intro. to Java class. I did a bit of light reading in the book, and it seems like it's straightforward. Well, we play the waiting game now, but it definitely seems like it will be a good lang. to learn.

Can anyone provide me with some examples of what you can do with Java?

Do you know C++?

Java and C++ are closely related so reading up a bit on C++ might help you out.

Ill be starting Java(AP) the same time you are(January)but I already know some C++.

Lets have fun.

No, I don't have any prior programming experience, I know a little bit of HTML, but not enough to do a web page. C++ is an entirely new language, as is Java, so I'm pretty excited about doing this, as I read they're closely related like you said. Any tips when I get started would be appreciated, but things should be pretty fun.

Any things I could do with like security-based code on Java?

I am a senior in highschool (18 & older dont worry, and yep, all you older dudes can call me immature and whatever now :-p) and I took AP Computer Science last year (got a 5, w00t) and I wrote this tetris game in java for my semester project (which had to utilize 2D arrays). You need java web start to use it but that comes standard with the runtime environment.

I'll give massive props to anyone who tops my high score :-p

I wrote a PHP script that accepts data from a URL connection that the java app makes to save the scores in a database. That wasn't part of my project requirement but I thought it would be cool to learn how to do it anyways.

Here it is:

(oh yeah, please don't like link it on other forums and stuff because my bandwidth isn't unlimited on that server)

EDIT: feel free to ask me for any info/help with java, i find it fun :-P

Heh I'll do the best I can :-p

It's not as bad as it sounds though...until you start getting into Recursion and massive sorts/tasks that use it...that gets confusing.

Those SAMS books are really good IMO. I have the "Teach yourself PHP in 24 hours" book and It got me on track from not knowing anything to knowing how to do just about anything I need to.
