how can I tell what codec I am missing when trying to play a movie? And where can I download it?

Nvidia > Paladin
ATI > Death Knight

It is usually whatever the extension is, such as .divx or .div is a DivX file, .avi is a video file .wma is Windows media player.

If you dont know the file extension type do a google search for it and find the a player that supports that type.
